The box office numbers are in for Friday September 18th and as expected Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs has come out on top pulling in 8 million. Considering Friday was a school day and the increased prices and demand seen with 3D offerings the average 3x Friday multiplier will likely be on the low side. For the weekend Meatballs will make close to 30 million.

In a slight upset it is The Informant! that comes in second beating out Jennifer’s Body. The Informant! made 3.7 million while Jennifer’s Body could only haul in 2.8 million. Sometimes Twitter can be an indicator of early box office success and other times it reveals that it is slanted towards a younger crowd that is more likely to talk about a movie. That is the case with Jennifer’s Body which was high on the Twitter trending topics all day on Friday and remains there despite none of the other movies making it onto the list.

The Informant! pulled in about what was expected and will finish the weekend around 12 million but Jennifer’s Body has to be considered a big disappointment considering the hype and marketing that was put into it. It’ll come out of the weekend with 8 million if it’s lucky and won’t have legs in the coming weeks. The other wide release was Love Happens and that drew 3.1 million and should see a weekend total of close to 10 million.

Friday’s box office takes puts Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, The Informant!, and Love Happens slightly above my predictions for the weekend. The surprise comes with Jennifer’s Body that was expected to have a much stronger open day.

I am not surprised that Jennifer's Body failed at the box office. It got bad reviews and Fox's acting got worse reviews. Although Diablo Cody penned the script, you can't expect Fox to be able to handle quick-witted dialogue with her limited acting range. She's no Ellen Page, who understood and complited Cody's script for Juno, because Page is a good, nuanced actress. Fox gets roles only because of the way she looks, not because she can act. I think they targeted a more female base with Jennifer's Body, since it was supposed to be empowering, but that didn't work now did it? I am pretty sure you had a lot of teenage boys sitting in that audience. Fox will still get cast, but at least now she'll be in her proper milieu

This female has no interest in seeing Jennifer's Body. I suspect it's mainly young males that will go see it, just for Fox.

Which could be a problem cause of the R rating. Probably prevented that interested segment from being able to see it.
