EA Sports Announcing New Game in January

In a time where games are being shaved from the EA portfolio comes news that a new EA Sports game is on the horizon. As tweeted this evening by an EA Canada community manager a new title will be announced in January. So the speculation begins as to what that game will be.

My gut feeling on this is that it will be a WWE offering. The license between the WWE and THQ had its deadline for notice of renewal pass. Once that happened the WWE extended that deadline to December 31st. It is possible THQ informed WWE they did not intend to continue the license at which point EA could have jumped in and made an offer. The announcement coming in January certainly would make sense given the framing of the circumstances. WWE brings an established fan base and wouldn’t be seen as too much of a risk even in these difficult economic times.

The only other thing that comes to mind that would make a big splash would be the return of MVP Baseball. Currently there are no signs that 2K Sports has been able to get out of the third party license agreement, which would open up EA to making MLB games again. However recent financial news has shown why they would want to do just that.

This could also end up being another in the line of downloadable arcade games. Both 3 on 3 NHL Arcade and Madden Arcade are viewed as successes. It seems only a matter of time before an NBA Arcade comes along. As mentioned by wildthing202 is FIFA World Cup 10 but calling that a “new” game would be a stretch since it’s already known to be on the way. EA has released one every World Cup year since 1998.

I hope you are wrong. I like wrestling games but to see EA dip into "sports entertainment" would not interest me.

I know it is nothing new but I was hoping to see the return of college baseball. OR, maybe a baseball alternative. Please let it be baseball related.

wow i hope its MVP baseball. i am switching to PS3 this Christmas (the commercials, my friends, and the fact that PS3 has more pros than cons compared to 360 despite the price and the lack of a decent baseball game for 360 has convinced me. not to mention even though cod mw2 came out, there is no break away title for the xbox that i dont have and that is a new one.) but the thing is that MVP baseball is simply amazing. i played it when i was around 11-13 years old all the time on my gamecube. it was the franchise mode that kept me coming back for more, couple along with the ADDICTING mini games and the just overall gameplay. couple that with amazing graphics and recent rosters and this game could be the best ever baseball game, yes, better than the show which is also amazing.

No way EA cuts a world-wide popular sport like tennis and then gives the go ahead to a regional sport like lacrosse. Keep dreaming on that one.

There is still one EA Sports franchise that won 'sports game of the year' awards and has not seen the light of day on ps3 or 360. So that said, we are long…and i mean LONG overdue for a nextgen SSX title. Id bet a good amount of money, with this announcement out of Canada, that it is not a new sport, but rather the return of one of the best EA titles.

It won't be WWE – that's not the type of brand EA Sports would carry. That is more of an EA Games title than anything else. They dilute their brand by offering 'vague' sports. Pro wrestling, although requiring a lot of skill and athleticism, is not a competition but a staged event. Boxing, MMA, Hockey, Football, Soccer, Basketball, etc – there are all actual sporting competitions.

Hopefully, it is MVP Baseball but I doubt it. I am not a supporter of EA but MVP 05 is the best baseball I have ever played considering I don't have a PS3.
