The season four finale of Dexter captured record ratings for original programming on Showtime. Growing 71% over the season three finale it drew over 2.5 million viewers at 9pm and over 3 million including the replay later in the evening. It was the biggest broadcast on Showtime overall since a 1999 Mike Tyson fight.

A direct beneficiary of Dexter’s success has been Californication which airs right after. It was up 72% over its previous season finale pulling in 1.1 million viewers. Californication was renewed earlier this year after it showed a 60% jump in its season premiere and ratings were strong throughout the season.

What did you think of the finales for Dexter and Californication? I was riveted throughout the episode of Dexter and knew that something big was coming but it was still a shock to see it play out that way. The entire season was great and it’ll be fascinating to see where they take the story from here. I also enjoyed the conclusion to the season of Californication and my interest in the show may have been saved. I had started to grow tired of the over-the-top nature with no real consequences being faced.

Dexter was amazing. What a bold ending to the season. This is why I love the show it has the courage to do things most don't.

Not a fan of Californication. Tried watching a few episodes but it was ridiculous.

    Dexter though is awesome.

I think I felt the same things Dexter felt. The show has a way of pulling you in and you feel what he feels and that's what makes him so likable. I knew something big was going to happen, but I had no idea it would end that way. I love love love the show!

Both Dexter and Californication are the best series i've ever seen on television. huge thumbs up to both. Dexter though, is an epic, and such an awesome finale – every season end gets harder to wait for the next. In season 5 i'd love dexter totally lose it – after what happened at the end of season four, i want him to break the code and all his rules and start throwing some fierce emotion into the mix.
Dont be too harsh on Californication Ollie, its ridiculous, but ridiculously good – no other show pushes things as far.

Dexter at its best. Still thought episodes 4, 9 and 10 are the strongest of the season. but the season finale was jaw dropping and shocking
