Ads in Madden 10 Causing Some Dismay

In-game advertisements in sports games are nothing new. For the most part they have been integrated well to actually enhance the immersive nature of the sports they are attempting to replicate. Madden 10 certainly has its share of sponsors displayed in differing ways though the majority of which don’t get in the way of the game being played.

However since the latest patch was released there has been a level of discontent building in the community regarding the pop-up ads that appear above the scoreboard before the snap. While these ads were displayed occasionally before the patch they were merely seen as a slight annoyance and only randomly appeared.

Following the second patch however reports from many indicate that the ads appear prior to almost every single play. While the particular ad in question doesn’t get in the way of anything critical it does stand out and in no way is representative of ads seen on NFL telecasts. The 360 gets primarily the Bing ad while the PS3 sees a never-ending stream for Madden Arcade.

Kotaku had a write-up about this very issue earlier today. Given that most of EA is on vacation for the holidays there may be no comment about it coming anytime soon. Response regarding the particular ads from gamers is mixed with some not minding while others find themselves very perturbed by them.

I have some doubt that the patch was designed to display the very same advertisement over and over. That really would not be viewed as an effective means of advertising and just creates the disruption that has since occurred. Regardless though having them appear so frequently and in such a distracting manner is something that should be addressed and hopefully EA clarifies the situation in the near future.

To the people complaining about the lack of replays: Are you guys playing on hardcore play calling mode? If so, then set it on advanced. The patch did cause for there to be more replays but it can (& should be) better.

Anyways, the ads really don't bother me at all to tell you the truth. It could be much much worse (e.g.: video ads, ad logos during replay transitions, etc.). I mean, there's many other games this gen that have in game ads and in those games it's worse in terms of placement but since we are talking about madden, it's another way for people to say "Tiburon/EA suxz". Just another one of the many ironic things when it comes to madden bashing.

If you guys knew how much money is actually generated by advertising you would be pissed. i am willing to bet that EA pays for its Madden advertisement blitz before madden comes out by selling in game advertisements after the release. you cant get mad at this. this is how our world is now. although i wish it was just like apps on a phone, where you can have the free version of something with advertisements or pay for the version with no ads. I know madden would never be free but i think the consumer should see some benifits to.

Pasta you must be hurting for storylines to post about. This whole advertisement in game is so overplayed and a total non issue. Its not even worth the added attention you are drawing to it now. It absolutely has zero inpact on the playablity, enjoyability of the game and it isn’t going away anytime soon. You want great games, this how its going to get paid for. This just shows that some people can't fin anything wrong with the game(other than the superstar mode) so they have to pick on the ads. It's not like they force it down our throats by stopping the game and showing a commercial or two.

This is really not an issue or a distraction to me. I play the game not the ads. I actually think it brings a sense of realism to the game. However I would feel that way even more if EA ever decided to use the ESPN licence in Madden that they already have paid to use.
