With one of its stronger individual days at the box office Avatar cruised past the $300 million mark in just its 15th day of release. The movie made an estimated $25 million on New Years Day taking it to $308.8 million. Its worldwide total is now over $800 million.

Only two movies have hit $300 million faster than Avatar. The Dark Knight did it in 10 days and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen made it there in 14 days. However opening weekend grosses for those were much larger making $81 and $31 million more respectively. Avatar has produced astonishing weekday grosses and only fell 2% in its second weekend which is unheard of for a blockbuster event type picture.

Avatar is already the 29th highest grossing movie domestically of all-time and by the end of the weekend will be 15th. The strength over the upcoming weekdays will be telling as to whether the film will have the potential to push towards becoming the biggest of all-time.

Not really, he just charges 3x's the regular price to boost sales. Less people go to the movies than before so they just jack up the ticket prices and now with the reintroduction of 3-D they can charge an even greater premium.

Thats a factor in the total dollar amount. But doesn't take into account the exceptionally low weekend drop-off or weekday totals that went up in the second week.

The total dollars are inflated due to the higher 3D and IMAX ticket prices but how well it is holding is the biggest sign of strength.
