For the last few months we’ve heard rumors, and read bits and pieces of information concerning the next ‘Batman’ film and the ‘Superman’ reboot. None of the info though was coming Christopher Nolan himself. Nolan is considered by many to be the most important piece to either of these films. After the success of The Dark Knight, many fans wanted a sequel but we weren’t sure if we were getting one. All signs pointed to yes, but until today we hadn’t heard anything concrete. The Los Angeles Times spoke with Christopher Nolan and he shed some light on the upcoming ‘Superman’ film, along with the news that there will be a third and final ‘Batman’ film.

On the ‘Superman’ film:

“A lot of people have approached Superman in a lot of different ways. I only know the way that has worked for us that’s what I know how to do,” Nolan said, emphasizing the idea that Batman exists in a world where he is the only superhero and a similar approach to the Man of Steel would assure the integrity needed for the film. “Each serves to the internal logic of the story. They have nothing to do with each other.”

The idea for the film apparently came while working on the next ‘Batman’. David Goyer, who penned the stories of the previous two ‘Batman’ films and is writing the screenplay for ‘Superman’, came up with an idea for a film on the ‘Man of Steel’. Nolan loved the idea, obviously, and now we’ll see that idea on the big screen. He goes on to say he’s not sure who will direct the ‘Superman’ film.

On the third ‘Batman’ film:

Jonathan Nolan is “now doing the hard work” of writing the script based on the story by his sibling and Goyer. “My brother is writing a script for me and we’ll wait to see how it turns out…. He’s struggling to put it together into the epic story that you want it to be.”

Nolan confirms that this will be the end of the road for ‘Batman’. This will be the final ‘Batman’ film he does. He also mentions that all the surviving characters from the previous two films will be back for the third. As far as the next villain? He did not say who, but did say it wouldn’t be ‘Mr. Freeze.’

This is pretty big news for any comic fan. Where one story ends, another begins. What do you think? Members of our forums have already been discussing the news. Be sure to chime in on the discussion.
