Variety is reporting that Judd Apatow is developing a new Pee-wee Herman movie, news of which was confirmed by Pee-wee (Paul Reubens) himself on Twitter. This will not be a project that Apatow directs however he will be on as a producer. It has been 22 years since the last Pee-wee film was in theaters.

“Let’s face it, the world needs more Pee-wee Herman,” Apatow told Daily Variety. “I am so excited to be working with Paul Reubens — who is an extraordinary and groundbreaking actor and writer. It’s so great to watch him return with such relevance.”

Reubens has been able to bring relevance back to the character over the past year though a series of live Pee-wee shows held across the country (all sold out) and an appearance during the final week of Conan O’Brien’s run on The Tonight Show. Reubens is currently working on the script for the film along with actor and comedy writer Paul Rust.
