Next UFC Game Won’t Arrive Until 2012

THQ has announced the upcoming release schedule for the company’s 2012 fiscal year. Of note is that the next UFC game will not be out until January or February of 2012.

Following a botched launch of UFC Undisputed 2010, huge sales slide from the previous year, and consumer discontent towards the product, THQ came out and stated that they were considering moving off the yearly schedule for the series. It was initially expected that any change to the release pattern would follow a UFC 2011 product in spring. It now appears though that they have shifted expectations and have decided that the next UFC game will have an 18+ month development cycle.

Soon to be facing competition in the market from EA Sports MMA, a series being developed on a two year development cycle going forward, winter 2011 positions the next UFC game well. Those are generally slow months where it would likely avoid facing heavy competition for dollars as it did against multiple AAA titles that released in the May-June period this year. UFC would also potentially be releasing with a big gap between MMA titles hitting the market, though there is much time to pass between now and then to see if it actually plays out that way.

Pasta: Do you think the MMA genre is here to stay or is UFC 2010 a sign that the genre is already on the decline.

I think it is just that UFC 2009 was such a startling success that expectations were altered. It isn’t a game that needs to be out every year, mostly because there is really no roster turnover. EA learned this with boxing games and now they’re alternating years with Fight Night and MMA.THQ released a game that offered little in the way of improvements, was broken (online), had numerous gameplay issues, tacked on an “online pass” at the last moment and tried to hide it from consumers, and didn’t do well with communication period. If they come with a fantastic product in 2012 I think we’ll see the sales return. I also think EA MMA will do well, probably won’t burst out of the gate but word of mouth could spread for that especially with those who were disappointed with UFC.

wwe has had all sorts of problems over the years but thq continues to churn them out. even making more wwe games now. is it just that mma gamers wont buy crap every year and wwe fans buy it no matter what (like madden fans)?

Being a wrestling fan but getting more and more tired of the WWE product I can confidently say that most WWE fans are sheep.

No, not at all. One big reason UFC 2010 didn’t sell as well was because the roster, while expanded, wasn’t changed much. WWE has a lot of roster turnover, and the guys that stay around for a while often change gimmicks, get pushed/de-pushed, and change a lot over the course of a year. Big difference. Plus there’s a lot more you can add and alter in a WWE game compared to the UFC. That doesn’t mean the WWE games are better; that’s just the way things work.

what are u talking about the roster not changing? you must not know much about the ufc haha! theres at least 20 or more new characters! get ur shit straight!

It was the right decision, THQ tried to do too much in such a short time & Undisputed 2010 became a rushed product as a result. From the game’s site crashing due to that stupid stunt with the demo to the online mode not working on release to the Machida takedown & “Shine” glitches on top of very unpopular career mode, there were just a lot of unnecessary problems.

I think the only problem people will have with EA Sports MMA is that the roster is very biased towards the top tier of fighters much like UFC 2009 was but it will still sell. Hopefully THQ fixes all their problems with the 2nd patch so they can capitalize on the holiday sales.

By 2012, there would be mma game 2,,,so there would be strict competition in every year for this mix martial arts game in any way.

    • Lns_xoxo547

dude ufc 2010 was way better than 2009 so i dont know what your talking about it being rushed. plus they fixed those takedowns and theres no problems with the game. update your shit and get right with the program!

theres always new faces in the UFC and always a new star rising. Unless they plan on updating rosters and stats then i dont see how this is a good idea. Especially if the 2012 games sucks.
EA MMA will be the better MMA Game anyway.

    FIGHTERS NEED THEIR OWN ENTRANCE

    • Anonymous

Especially with the likes of fighters like Tom Lawler, GSP, and even King Mo. Something both games should have.
The only problem with making this is that 95% of people online skip the intros =/
