Roy Halladay Gets MLB 2K11 Cover

2K Sports has announced that Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay will be the cover athlete for MLB 2K11. Halladay is not a surprise except in that pitchers seem to have a tougher time getting covers than position players. Tim Lincecum was amongst the few when he most recently received the cover of MLB 2K9. Check out the full MLB 2K11 cover featuring Halladay in the gallery.

Halladay went 21-10 with a 2.44 ERA and will likely end up winning the NL Cy Young award. He opened the playoffs with a no-hitter, only the second ever to occur in the postseason, and back in May pitched a perfect game.

Which sort of locks Halladay as the Cy Young winner. 2K Sports is usually told by MLB this stuff.

Yeah, I’m surprised they didn’t make the announcement the same day which is what they did with Lincecum.

Good I hate the Phillies, this ensures I wont have to look at Doc while I play The Show haha. He deserves it though, hes filthy.

  • Gregg

Nice choice but that cover art is terrible. Par for the course though for MLB 2K.

Why do the baseball games always feature an all-american white guy on the cover? (no im not an ultra liberal black guy im actually white).

But come on…Jeter, Lincecum, Longoria, Mauer, Halladay? The only token guy in there was Reyes who was a bad choice.

    What about Miguel Cabrera?

    • http://twitter.com/TheRealKSpike Kyle Speicher

Well, Halladay was essentially the best pitcher in the game this year. It’s not like they bypassed a better player to get to some second tier white guy. Perhaps they’re alternating AL/NL each year.

      And what about:
      David Ortiz
      Ryan Howard

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jonah-Falcon/525044162 Jonah Falcon

Er, Ortiz and Howard were snagged by MLB The Show.By the way, Pedro Martinez was the cover athlete for MLB 2K for the first 3 years.

And by the way, Jeter is mixed race (black dad, white mom.)

        • Rase370

But he mentions Mauer and he was on the cover of The Show

      • JohnZapp

Definitely Ryan Howard but he didnt put up any new numbers this season

        • Rase370

I meant that they were on the cover

    Pasta.
Something new about The Show? Like the Move control, 3D etc.?
And do you remember when they announced the Cover Boy?

    Thanks

    • http://pastapadre.com/ pastapadre

Last year they announced the cover on December 17th.

The Show 11 will have move controls and 3D, though they’ll just be optional additions.

Nice choice, obviously. I would place my bets on either Josh Hamilton or Buster Posey. The last two coverboys have been AL MVPs, but Posey being ROTY and a WS winner might also be apt. Jayson Heyward is also in the running, as is Cabrera, Pujols, Bautista (54 HRs). Or, they might counter and go with a pitcher, like Sabathia, Lee, Hernandez, Pryce, or Wainwright.

It is REALLY disappointing for me that The Show doesn’t announce any details until really late (2k doesn’t either, but I really only care about the Show.) First little game play leak usually comes in January, 2 months before release, and the last of the features are not revealed until less than a week before sometimes. First details on Madden, NCAA, NBA 2k, and even NHL all come out 4-5 months in advance. Why not start announcing stuff now, 4 months before the March release? EA MMA probably had the issue where they released too much to fast and their sales might have suffered as a result, but still, I’M DYING to find this stuff out. I even had a dream where I was playing an early build of the game and I woke up and wrote all of my impressions down, NO JOKE.

Josh Hamilton would be a great pick for The Show, but I think the World Series runner up stigma might get in the way. If I had a guess, Your other guesses seem possible, but I’d add Robinson Cano and Joey Votto.

I like both of them as well, but I don’t know if they have the star power. Votto is a frontrunner for MVP, and was part of a Cinderella team, but I don’t know if that’s enough. I personally would like to see Robinson Cano, and I think he is the best player on the Yankees even though he is constantly overshadowed, plus he did amazingly well in the postseason, unlike many (ahem) $30 million dollar players. Still, I don’t think so.

Serioulsy, why does 2k even bother paying big name athletes to promote a piece of crap game. They should take that money and hire people who can actually make a baseball game.

Anyway 2k’s stranglehold on the MLB will soon be over and so will 2k baseball. I am pretty sure EA is chomping at the bit to get back into baseball and everyone should know that EA knows baseball…….MVP2004 anyone?

I am glad that I own a PS3 and don’t have to be subjugated to the crap baseball game that 2k puts out. MLB the show is miles beyond anything 2k could put together. 360 fans, do you realize that the money you have spent on MLB2k7,8,9,10, you could of had a PS3 and be playing the best baseball game ever made.

    • http://pastapadre.com/ pastapadre

Do you remember how they paid like 12 MLB players to “consult” on the game and acted like they were helping in development? That to me is more disingenuous than the cover.

Pasta: You know as well as I do that 2k banks on gimmicks and big named promotions to sell a substandard product. They do it for every game, every year. The fact that they finally put out a respectable product in NBA2k11 is astounding, but even that game still has many problems.

2k sports are the used car salesman of the video game industry. Slick and slippery characters looking to dupe the unassuming customer. There track record speaks for its self. What I find ironic is how 2k fanboy doesn’t treat NBA2k like they treat Madden. Madden is clearly superior to NBA2k but yet 2k fanboys act as if Madden were the worst game ever made and NBA2k is flawless.

Byte for Byte Madden is far more polished than NBA2k has ever been. You don’t get to be the number 1 selling sports game every year for 2 decades by making an inferior product.

You have a ps3 and play the show, which is a great game in it’s own right. But how can you trash 2k baseball if you never played it. The most recent version was actually pretty good and a huge step over 2k9. EA knows baseball, MVP2004, six years ago. Really??That’s a lifetime in a product’s many development cycles. Your post is strictly without merit. You should of at least tried 2k10 to make you post valid. There are few around that would argue that the 2k10 is a better game, but don’t let your ignorance get in the way of you at least trying 2k10 or future 2k baseball games. You might actually think it’s worth playing if you were ever over a friend’s who had a 360 or might even consider picking it up if you ever got a 360 yourself.

      • Asdf

I played 2k10 and The Show. Seriously, 2k10 was like a cartoon compared to the Show, both in looks and gameplay. That series is years behind. Can’t wait until the license exclusivity expires.

Of course I have played it. You don’t have to buy a game to have played it. I have played every year of 2k baseball and every year the game is terrible. Of course nothing will compare to the debacle of 2k8 but the game is so beneath the show or even MVP2004.

I don’t know if you have ever played the show, but if you are trying to rationalize how 2k baseball is decent then you seriously have flawed judgement. There are just some things that fanboys cant rationalize and 2k baseball is one of them. Its just a bad franchise and one that needs to go away.

    i just un-preordered

Oh common, man! I hate the Phills too, but I have a lot of respect for Halladay, and to have the kind of year he did, probably winning a Cy Young, pitching a perfect game, and throwing a no-hitter in the playoffs is just spectacular. He deserves it, and there is no reason for you to buy or not buy the game based on the piece of paper on the cover. If 2k11 doesn’t merit a purchase, that’s ok. Just let it be based on the actual game and what value you feel it might hold in your life.

Ahh its that time of year again. I picked up The Show last year and it was pretty fun, though I eventually got rid of it for a new game. However I want to pick up a baseball game again its just a matter of either getting 10 again or waiting to see what The Show 11 has to offer this year. (Weather, Rain Delays hopefully?)

  • jusmegamer

Cool, hopefully the game takes another step forward this year. Pasta were are the #’s for NBA 2K11 sales?

Should be hearing at least some results tomorrow.

Brian “The World Champ Beard” Wilson should be the shows coverboy. That would be epic… Fact!

Hopefully this means they are going to focus more on Pitching in this years addition and make it more of a battle at the plate. Though I’m not going to get my hopes up. After last years game I’m definitely renting this game first before I buy, might not even do that if the reviews aren’t very good. I’ve always been a loyal customer, not that they have put out a superior product more like it’s my only choice and I love baseball that much but after that joke of a game last year, they have to earn the trust back.
