Review: The Hangover Part II

The idea of a sequel to the 2009 film The Hangover was a welcome one after having caught audiences off-guard with its hilarious situations in Las Vegas while raking in the cash to become the highest grossing R-rated comedy of all-time. The characters were likable on their own and had great chemistry together so the thought of following them further absolutely made sense.

In the lead-up to The Hangover: Part II however there has been concern regarding the appearance that the plot is a carbon copy of the original. Unfortunately that has largely been realized, and despite a number of big laughs the movie feels uninspired and all too familiar.

The setting has changed to Thailand but the scenarios are largely the same. A bachelor party spins out of control and the guys wake up not remembering a thing about the night and realizing someone is missing. From there it is a race around the city as they try to put the pieces together. Substitute monkey for baby for easy reactionary laughs and so on.

The majority of the developments parallel what took place in the first film to a frustrating degree. Being unable to overlook that it made each and every reveal feel forced. Surprises really didn’t feel as though they were surprises and ultimately they all led to predictable conclusions. Even the new locale didn’t really add much to the story but to provide the backdrop as they raced around without largely inhibiting their efforts. The photos during the credits sequence though were genuinely funny yet again and almost made the whole thing worthwhile on their own.

If just one unexpected thing took place it’s that I came away having really enjoyed Ken Jeong as Mr. Chow despite not having cared for the character in the first movie. All the other actors were playing their roles identical to the first except for Alan (Zach Galifianakis) who was quite mean-spirited early on and that felt somewhat out of place and distracting.

As much as its familiarity hampered its potential The Hangover II was still full of laughs and I can’t overlook that entirely. The main problem is that these characters just can’t shock me anymore regardless of what they get themselves into. In fact by the end I started to dread the prospect of them in a third film attempting to top the first two. You pretty much know what you’re going to get with The Hangover II, an enjoyable but unoriginal follow-up, and for such a popular comedy that may be just enough to entice audiences out and satisfy the masses.

Rating: ★★½☆☆

I saw it last night….I’d give it an 80/100.  I think the main killer is the previews show a lot of things that should have been left to see for the first time in the theatre.  I think overall it’s a great sequel.

Thanks pasta… I am still going to download it though and check it out even though it is seeming like a very familiar movie from the first.

I bet you would have rated it 5 stars if the movie was made by EA Sports. /sarcasm
Sorry. I couldn’t resist. I get a lot of sports game news from here. Keep up the good work.

I actually thought this one was better than part 1 although I didn’t care too much for part 1. I agree that because the scenarios are just about identical, it took away from the enjoyment and had no surprises. Had this been part 1, I think I would have liked it even more.

I still have a gripe with the whole not remembering anything. I mean ruffies (in part 1) can definitely affect your memory, but at the same time, mixing ruffies with alcohol will likely put you out for the count in a short period of time, and certainly you would not have the ability to carry on as the gang did in part one.

Same goes with part two. I don’t want to give it away but the combination of drug and alcohol used as the reason for the amnesia and the subsequent actions that follow are so unrealistic. I get that it’s a movie, but I just have a hard time getting past this fact.

I thought the writing was much better in part 2. The “Allen” character has some great lines and it gave the film a content validity which I thought it lacked in part 1.

Overall, if you liked part 1, you will like part 2. The fact the the story line is almost identical does take away some enjoyment but you can still get into the movie and get some good laughs not only from the funny scenes but also from the witty jokes. 3/5 part 2… 2/5 part 1

This was definitely better than the first one. I Laughed my ass off. the cocaine use was a lil much but it was necessary for some laughs like when chow first dies lol. It was called part II for a reason, you were supposed to go into the movie expecting them to forget what they did the night before. C’mon like u didn’t know the plot was going to be pretty much the exact same as the first. gimmie a break. 9/10 for a comedy.
