The nominees for the 2011 Emmy Awards were announced this morning with the show scheduled to take place on Sunday September 18th on Fox.

Leading the way with 21 nominations is HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce. That is followed with 19 for Mad Men, 18 for Boardwalk Empire, and 17 for Modern Family. Also notable is Game of Thrones pulling in 13 in its first season and Friday Night Lights finally getting the nod for Best Drama along with the two lead acting categories. A notable omission with only a few technical noms was AMC’s The Walking Dead.

It seems like the committee did a better job this year bringing in well deserving nominees rather than just stacking with past winners or going off reputation alone. I would have taken Dexter out of the running – its worst season should not have been recognized here – and replaced it with Fringe or Justified. Community also got snubbed by not being placed in the running for Best Comedy.
