The demo for NHL 13 is out now for the Xbox 360 (can be queued up in advance for download here) and will arrive on the PS3 when the store updates this afternoon. It features a Stanley Cup rematch of New Jersey Devils at Los Angeles Kings, an NHL Moments Live recreation of the Western Conference Finals game 5 with the Kings at Phoenix Coyotes, the opportunity to start up Hockey Ultimate Team, and a free skate mode to get acclimated to the new “True Performance Skating”. As always leave any impressions of the demo in the comments!

I think the new broadcast camera sucks. Sure it looks really cool but to play with I don’t like it

Give it time. I tried it and at first, I did not like it. But, after a few games, I noticed so much more of where my players were and how you could see opportunities open up. This was really cool to play like the game you see on TV. Also, it will default your shooting stick to change your shot from up and down to a side-to-side motion, you can change this back.

There were a couple of bugs I found. One was my defenseman took the puck from behind my goalie and actually went through the goal and around the net. Play continued instead of a goal being awarded. Second was a picture of Dwight King of the LA Kings took a penalty and they had a picture of an African-American player, and King is not.

Overall, I like the demo and I will be a buyer. The skating physics are well done, but I think it will be very difficult to score goals, at least at first, which may frustrate a good number of players and I only play on the Pro level.

Oh wow I didn’t know you could change the controls back to normal. Thats my main gripe with the new camera but now that I know that I can change it back I’m gonna go try it out, thanks.

Everybody can trash Madden, but the one big thing Madden does that I wish this (and many other sports games) did was allow a full game in the demo, instead of just being limited to a period.

That said, from the little bit I got to play, I liked it. The new skating engine feels pretty good. Didn’t try out the broadcast camera that a lot of people have been excited for, but I also wasn’t one of those people.

Probably won’t end up buying it this year, as I can’t really afford it, at least at launch (maybe if it drops in price a bit later, but that’s pretty rare here for the NHL series), but I like the demo.

Tried out the broadcast camera, and wasn’t a fan, not because it’s done badly (seems like it was executed pretty well), but simply because playing with the Ice camera for all of these years makes anything else feel too weird. It does look good from a visual perspective though.

I don’t know if this is something from the past couple of years, since I haven’t bought an NHL game since NHL 10, but I really like that the puck feels like a separate entity instead of constantly being stuck to your player. A couple of the unrealistic things that I used to do in NHL 10 no longer work because the puck doesn’t stay with your player.

Best hockey game I ever played def a must buy for me

Played a few games today. The new skating engine feels really great. You can tell EA Canada tuned a bunch of crap, like they did last year, to make it more noticeable though (the glass broke on my first hit. sad face). It’s frustrating sometimes but certainly manageable and I expect it to be less so once the full game is out.

I did not have a chance to try out the broadcast camera yet. I don’t know how it will be in terms of the shooting and everything, but you never know unless you try.

HUT is still just unfair in the demo, as it was last year. I like being challenged, but when NHL tries to do it the game just ends up unfair and it becomes a “how can I exploit the computer” game rather than a realistic hockey game. Again, that’s usually tuned correctly for the full game.

Ummm, I thought poke checks were a touch too sensitive, though more realistic. Graphics were very nice. Player likenesses, when they are in the game, are better-looking. It was nice to see the new player photos for aesthetic purposes. Annnnnd goalies are better and sniping is more realistic.

I think that’s it for my impressions of the demo. Overall pretty good. Obviously withholding final judgement, as I do with every game.
EDIT: Doing the True Broadcast playthrough right now. Honestly, this game looks even better with that camera. I almost feel like they developed the new skating engine IN that camera because of how much better it looks. Very impressed.

“the glass broke on my first hit. sad face”

I’ve played three games now, and haven’t seen the glass break once. I did manage to knock a couple of guys into the bench though.

i played it on ps3 and it lagged and felt really slow. broadcasters were in and out. anyone else have this problem??

  • Eric

Anyone else having a problem when the puck moves too quickly and is out of the shot, but you’re controlling the guy with the puck?

  • Gigs

Played for the first time in 2 years and went to triple OT in the Hockey Moments demo. This game is much better than 10 and 11. I haven’t played 12, but I get the feeling it’s better. Definitely going to buy this

  • wizard

    this demo is ballz !!!
    its sooooo fucking good

  • YikesStripes

The whole feel of it feels like one of the later 2k efforts in terms of presentation and in game replays, goalies, faces, nba 2k commentary (sorta), but the most important thing, the gameplay, is as good as EA’s game has over the past like, 4 years. The skating feels awesome (especially the cuts with the puck) the goals seem varied, the goalies flop realistically…. Man, nba 2k13, pro evo 2013, and this….the dent on my couch is going sink infinitely more in these coming months.

AND FINALLY SOME (some.) DECENT MENU MUSIC! YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!
