FIFA 13 Delivers Huge Sales Increase for EA Sports in North America

FIFA 13 is off to a big start in North America with first day sales 42% higher than FIFA 12 totaling 353K copies. It wasn’t long ago that the region was fairly weak ground for FIFA but the growth has been staggering in the last three years.

FIFA 12 became the fastest selling sports game in history worldwide moving 3.2 million copies in its first week alone and going on to surpass well over 10 million. Coming off such a strong effort last year, and with record pre-order numbers of 1.3 million already, FIFA 13 is in line to potentially beat those records as well as it releases today internationally.

The impressive early numbers for FIFA 13 comes after strong starts for both Madden NFL 13 (8% higher first week) and NHL 13 (9% higher first week) with NCAA Football 13 (12% down first month) the big concern for EA Sports in the near future.

  • Keith.

LoL @ EA (and Pasta) with these sales “increase” news releases. 350,000 copies sold between 360, PS3, Vita, iOS, etc., isn’t exactly very impressive.

And speaking of Vita, anybody see any reviews of FIFA 13 for Vita? I’ve looked all over and can’t find one anywhere. Must be another garbage roster update from EA.

Looking forward to seeing the new weekly sales info later today, and how far M13 is falling with all of the 2 star Amazon reviews that are out there. Just wish Pasta wasn’t keeping the Line Drive closed for comments, keeping us from talking about it there.

    • Truth in reporting

EA could really use some good news right now. They’re most popular sports titles are failing badly. Live13 cancelled 2 years in a row. For Madden NFL 13, you have to be online to even try and enjoy it, the artificial intelligence is garbage, the servers are lagging, and retailers are discounting it only weeks after release. It takes long enough just to log in to play Madden this year, and not to mention all the freezing issues. The NHL series? No offense but, that game and its fan base is only for a certain demographic of pink hued people. Not hearing any big circle of hype for that game anywhere, either. Tiger Woods? Who cares about that one? The niche crowd obviously doesn’t. EA is falling rolling downhill…FAST.

      • Truth in reporting

edit: “Their” most popular sports titles are failing badly. We don’t want the grammar police coming in here acting like they didn’t know what the context of the statement was because I used “they’re” incorrectly.

      • Skopin

What retailers are discounting it? Best buy, Walmart, and Target are all still at $59.99.

And please learn the proper use of there, their, and they’re.

        • Truth in reporting

See? I knew some little sissy bitch like you would come in and cry about me using “they’re”. I guess you were so fast to try and correct me, being the trivial bitch that you are, that you missed the edit I just wrote. Amazon discounted it, which I’m sure you already know that too, and I would imagine that they sell way more videogames than all of the other retailers you just mentioned.

          • Truth in reporting

But you being Skopin, you just challenged the one statement that you thought you could. You pithy fool.

          • Skopin

Do you even know what pithy means? I’m guessing you don’t or you wouldn’t have used it.

          • Skopin

I’m sorry. I was under the impression that “retailers” meant that you could provide more than one legitimate example. Amazon is one…I have given you 4 major ones that still have it for full price. Care to try again?

And yes, I will call you out all day on not proof reading when you try to sound smarter than you are.

        • Keith.
          • Truth in reporting

He knew it, but he’s just purposely stupid like that. I gotta learn to just not reply to the purposely stupid people like Skopin.

          • Skopin

I get annoyed when people try to sound smart but can’t use words that mean what they think they do.

          • Truth in reporting

reread what you just wrote. then shut the fuck up and go away for the rest of the day.

          • Skopin

Sorry. I’m using my phone and I forgot to remove a word when I changed my sentence. But rather than make a new post like a moron, I used the edit button.

          • Truth in reporting

you CAN use the edit button because you log into DIscus to post, you moron. I don’t log in to post, so I can’t edit. But I knew a petty little chump like you would show up to correct me, so I rewrote the word anyway. I guess you didn’t figure that one out either. MORON.

          • Skopin

So in other words, you just type the same stupid name on every time you post? Also, it’s disqus, not discus.

          • Truth in reporting

Go play with your little dingaling, you little child. You ain’t saying anything anybody cares about at this point. Nobody wants to read this whole page of you acting purposefully stupid anymore. Moving on.

          • Skopin

“I can’t offer a real argument to what you’re saying, so I’m going to resort to bad attempts at making fun of you.”

I edited your post for you.

          • Skopin

He said retailers. As in more than one.

          • Truth in reporting

Thats what the Google shopping link was for, you dummy. Of course a clown like you always goes and pays the highest price possible when you shop for something.

You don’t know when you’ve had enough, do you?

          • Skopin

You googled madden 13. I saw 2 links on the first 2 pages to buy it. One was amazon and one was GameStop. Point?

          • Truth in reporting

Once again for the stupid people among us.

“Of course a clown like you always goes and pays the highest price possible when you shop for something.”

The point is to always try and pay the lowest amount possible for something, you dumb fuck.

You STILL don’t know when you’ve had enough, do you?

          • Skopin

You’re not making any sense. Your original statement was that retailers (plural) have discounted the game. All I said was that no one outside of amazon has done so. You have failed to provide any counter argument to that. I could probably find one on eBay for $20. That doesn’t make your initial statement any more valid.

        • Truth in reporting
          • Skopin

Very good. You can use google. Not sure what you’re trying to show me though. Amazon has it cheap like every other thing. But GameStop also still has it at full price.

          • tish

lol who the fuck buys “new” games at Gamestop? Their idea of a new game is opened with all the inserts taken out.

        • Christopher5

          boom

      • cope

sorry redneck but hockey is 10 times bigger than fooseball worldwide bro you gotta check your redneck ass no one outside of america cares about fat ass redneck ball

    • http://pastapadre.com/ pastapadre

That’s a huge number…there’s no spinning it otherwise man. 42% more than last year is a tremendous jump. FIFA, just like 3 or 4 years ago, would only pull about 200K in its first month in North America. Now it moved 350K in a day. Impressive.

  • Truth in reporting

That’s because because there are a whole lot of immigrants in North America. Both legal and illegal. Most “Americans” don’t care for soccer. Football is king in America. Sadly the one “American” company that made our only national football game, couldn’t do as good a job on an “American” football game, as they did for our fans of soccer. But after reading some of the customer reviews, supposedly they just made the same game all over again, and slapped a new year on it. We’re all used to that by now from them. Hopefully they make enough to recover the development costs associated with their 2 consecutive failed attempts at basketball, another “American” sport, more popular than soccer.

    • Phil Shannon

soccer is the second most popular sport in the 18 to 24 demographic in america, so soccer is american. The 18 to 24 year olds are a big part of the gaming market. So it would make sense that EA would focus on it. Also the sport of soccer is the fastest growing sport in america.

      • Truth in reporting

        That’s what you say.

        • Guest

Truth in reporting… you’re an idiot. It should be obvious to anyone who pays attention that since the inception of the MLS, soccer has made fantastic inroads into America. And no it’s not all due to those with parents not born in America. Houston’s newly built stadium is down the road from where I work, and when I frequent it, what do you know, honest to God white people attend games. And how about the stat that more kids play youth soccer than basketball? Bet it’s quite easy to sound intelligent in your mind when you’re dropping quips like “football is king.” B.S. Football is dying with this younger generation. And some of that can be seen in the declining number in Madden sales. But I don’t know why I try to reason with someone who put so much thought into their name. You must long to be respected.

          • Truth in reporting

“And how about the stat that more kids play youth soccer than basketball? Football is dying with this younger generation and some of that can be seen in the declining number in Madden sales.”

Wow. What incredibly fucking ignorant comments. Americans don’t give a flying fuck about soccer. And to think that you would believe Americans would choose any kind of soccer over the Major League Baseball, the NFL and NBA is blindly fucking ignorant. Of course a border state person like you would think that stupid shit. Whew!!! Get the fuck out of Texas asap, everybody in Texas is stupid like that.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000220160801 Mike Davis

Speak for yourself idiot, i’m American and i love soccer, i also love football, but don’t assume to know that all Americans don’t like soccer! Grow up kid.

          • Truth in reporting

So I’m wrong to speak for all of America, but then its ok that you alone represent all Americans, Mike Davis? You are just one paroled felon. You probably like a lot of things now that you never liked before. I won’t even mention what some of those things are, but remember…you need to stay about 500 ft away from youth soccer fields. You grow the fuck up.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000220160801 Mike Davis

where did i say “ALL AMERICANS LIKE SOCCER” i said ” i’m American and i love soccer” so your stupid point about Americans not giving a fuck about soccer is “CLEARLY” wrong, since i’m American, and i love soccer. It’s pretty funny how you make things up about what people say, just to cover how stupid your dumbass comment is! So go play with your toys, and have fun showing everyone how immature you are!

          • Truth in reporting

Aw, don’t be like that Mike. I was just kidding. All I’m saying is that soccer will never eclipse, or even come close to American football, baseball, or basketball, here in America. I just don’t see it, but that’s just me.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000220160801 Mike Davis

totally agree, just saying there are more soccer fans now then before, in the U.S. since the MLS. No offense taken, just fighting fire with fire, LOL.

          • Phil Shannon

The MLB numbers have been decling. It is boring even if you attend the games.I havent watcheda baseball game in 3 years.

          • http://twitter.com/OllieNYankees Ollie James

They haven’t. In fact this year is one of the best all round for MLB Attendance. The only thing declining is the interest in playing the sport by African Americans as sports like Basketball and Football (not soccer) appeal more at the moment. Soccer is still a niche sport here and whilst it has gained in popularity, it’s still not even close as the ‘Big 4′

  • Zbuc

EA Canada produces FIFA and NHL, the two EA Sports titles far and away anything better than the domestic productions. In this case, we cannot blame Canada.

    • smsixx

      Nice

    • http://pastapadre.com/ pastapadre

They also made NBA Elite 11, Facebreaker, and many other duds. They have a much more reliable system up there – allowing FIFA and NHL to grow and advance like they have – but ultimately it’s resources, direction, and talent that matters and that will vary from team to team.

  • lonnie

i’m not a soccer fan and don’t even know most of the teams or players,i get bored watching it but man is this a fun video game to play, its just fun, anyone like me who is not a fan of soccer just give it a chance,as a video game its a blast to play.

    • Guest

yeah ok, I would try it but with the huge backlog of all the great games non sports games out there…FUCK NO. Why would anyone waste 60 bucks on a sport they don’t even like watching on tv?

      • lonnie

because its fun..thats what i play video games for.

        • Guest

yeah, me too. but I don’t buy games for sports that I have ZERO interest in. there are far too many games out there that i actually LIKE and don’t always have the time to play, and soccer is definitely not one of them. thats just me.

          • lonnie

.i felt like you also till one time i played a demo a few years ago and i was hooked but i understand what your saying..there are a lot of games out there on my wish list as well

        • Phil Shannon

That is me with NHL, it is a fun game, but I would never watch it unless I was at the game.

          • http://twitter.com/philsites Phil Sites

@lonnie, reminds me of one of my buddies who could care less about soccer. I tried to show him FIFA was fun regardless of what you think of the real-life sport. He could barely look at it for 5 minutes. Then one day he all of a sudden was addicted to FIFA, so much so that he was even following the real sport now. I asked him what the heck happened. Well, apparently he met an British ex-pat out at a bar who played FIFA tournaments for money. He got him hooked on the game and the rest is history…

I respect the sport and follow it very casually (too many leagues to get lost in for me to get too serious), but I absolutely love the video game. You don’t have to like this sport on TV to like it on the video game, it’s that good a game.

    • http://pastapadre.com/ pastapadre

I agree with you. I’ve grown to understand and appreciate the sport more over the last few years (thanks to the Sounders) but FIFA is one of the few sports games that can be really fun even to those who normally wouldn’t watch it on TV or in person.

      • 49ersfan1

        and the earthquakes are no.1!

  • http://twitter.com/humblewarfare Steve Raycraft

I would love to see an MLS game by EA Canada. They already have Century Link field built.

    • http://www.facebook.com/IndySportsGuy Tyler Drake

A game with MLS only will not sell. However, there is a very good representation of MLS in FIFA 13 career mode… besides, the goal in MLS is to make the CONCACAF Champions League (4 US Spots) which in turn sends it’s champion to the Club World Cup. All of the leagues are directly intertwined in this aspect and FIFA 13 has the south american and european champions leagues already in the game. They just need to build on what they have, and that will come next gen.

    • Phil Shannon

I prefer to play with the best players, also the MLS is in fifa 13. I have played like 3 games with MLS teams in fifa 12. Unless you live near a MLS team, there isnt much of a point to use them, Like 8 players in the MLS are household names to the rest of the world

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Curtis-Leon-Douglas/100000586305337 Curtis Leon Douglas

yes its will we dont have mls team. but soccer does good here in michigan. and i didnt like fifa at first. but i find my self watching mls, and fifa soccer on tv. and im willing to try it. because of the career mode. im glad that josh looman the devil is not head bannana of this game.

    • http://pastapadre.com/ pastapadre

EA was considering an MLS game a few years ago. Makes even more sense now. Light development costs involved with a growing league. MLS surpassed NBA and NHL in average attendance last year.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jordanjonescpa Jordan Jones

Is that Dave Chappelle? I was wondering where he went.

  • tish

I’m sure this “huge” sales “increase” is exactly the same as the “huge” sales “increase” for both madden and ncaa football. lmao.

  • Guest

This is from all of those people who traded in the crapfest which is Madden. This game is LIGHT YEARS beyond Madden. It just goes to show you how poor the talent is on the Madden dev team. FIFA is amazing, very polished and extraordinarily realistic. How come there isn’t more on this site detailing the ridiculous amount of bugs and unpolished gameplay in Madden?
