The third episode of the Press Row Hangout features the duo of myself and Rich Grisham of GamesRadar. Ideally the shows will offer three or more contributors going forward but it was just unable to come together this week. Topics discussed include the possibility of game prices going up with the next generation, MLB 13: The Show info and lack thereof for MLB 2K13, the choice made by both to go without demos, the never-ending NCAA Football 14 cover vote process, and more thoughts on the PS4. As always leave any feedback or suggestions for things to discuss in the future in the comments!

Since I missed asking a question for this episode, I wanted to ask something that can be answered either on the next one or on the podcast (which I’ll reluctantly listen to since I am actually quite interested in hearing an answer).

(This question is geared more towards the guys who don’t write for PP or OS) Considering the fact that most major outlets have shifted away from sports game coverage, is there ever a fear that sports game coverage may be more hard to come by, or is the introduction of the next console cycle open the door for the genre to get more “mainstream” attention?

I ask this question because recently, a lot of websites have gone through layoffs. Last year, both IGN and GameSpot eliminated their sports-editors and have shifted to only reviewing sports games and have completely stopped previewing them unless there is something really “news” worthy. Rich, who does freelance for GamesRadar is not a full-time employee (as he said on the hangout that his full-time gig is software development) while it appears that Samit’s coverage of sports titles on Polygon only get a fraction of the traffic other stories get.

I know this might be a touchy subject, I doubt people like to talk about job-security publicly but I think it could be a really interesting subject, especially since Rich did mention in the hangout that you guys are essentially the best (and now, only) sports video games writers around.

Sorry for going so long winded but it is something that I can’t be the only person curious about. I’ve actually tried to reach out to the editors who used to serve as the Sports Editors of GameSpot and IGN but they haven’t returned my questions, which gives me even more of a reason to assume people aren’t willing to talk about such sensitive subjects.

Thanks, I’ll bring up the idea to discuss. Things might be tight in the next week or two cause of the MLB games releasing and plenty of talk on them I’m sure, but I think it’s something we can get around to addressing. It’s a good topic.
