Work has continued on the return of Mutant Football League despite an unsuccessful crowd-funding campaign in 2013. The game has been so under-the-radar since that when pre-alpha footage (check it out here) was posted two weeks passed until any media site took notice.

Creator and lead designer of the original Mutant League Football (released in 1993 on Sega Genesis) Michael Mendheim has been driving the development of the PS4/XB1/PC/iOS/Android reboot. During the Kickstarter campaign a target release date of summer 2015 was stated but that might be overly optimistic to expect now, especially with a publisher and additional investment still being sought. The hope is that it’ll be out sometime before the end of the year.

Mutant Football League was only able to draw 19% of its funding goal in the original Kickstarter campaign. At one point the plan was to try crowd-funding again, with less of a focus on mobile, but it seems to be going the more traditional route now.

The near extinction of arcade-style games has meant creative ideas, even those potentially to be resurrected from the past, have a much harder road to travel. Super Mega Baseball has shown it can be done though, and Mutant Football League would have the advantage of nostalgia and some remaining brand recognition on its side. Continue on to check out the slate of expected features for the game!

Previously Announced Features

Mutants take the field to battle it out in the most violent game ever played in this hilarious and brutal parody of professional Football. Mutant Football League pays homage to the classic Sega Genesis game by building a great playing action football game with deep strategy, creature customization, over-the-top violence and of course laugh-out-loud gross out humor.

Mutants vs. Monsters
30 vicious teams made up of a variety of awesome fully customizable Monster and Mutant characters including, Mutant Humans, The Undead, Battlebots, Orcs, and a wide variety of monstrous creatures. Backers will be helping decide what types of species, how they look, thier names and attributes.

Gridiron Karnage
Inflict devastating mayhem on the opposition with punching, kicking, bombs, clubs, axes and even chainsaws and once again backers will be helping us design the types of weapons and how much damage they inflict.

Killer Stadiums
The stadiums are filled with crazed and obnoxious weapon-wielding fans and the fields are strewn with hazards, traps and debris. No field is the same and all fields are deadly. Backers will help us name each field and determine field properties like hazards, objects and field surfaces.

Dirty Trick Plays
These are mean, nasty, unfair and lowdown plays intended to hose the opposition and if that doesn’t work, kill them. What types of Nasty Plays? How many crazy ways are there to kill the opposition? Who knows? That’s why we need your help brainstorming this stuff!

Cutomizable Creatures
Create and name your own team and players, assign players a position, train them with skills and abilities, give them attack moves, add armor and weapons and let them loose!

Tongue-Through-Cheek Humor
A fun, entertaining and off-the-wall parody of the NFL…with all the excitement, hard-hitting action, lunacy, unspeakable greed, corporate ruthlessness, hypocrisy and over-the-top egos the NFL has to offer. Our writing team includes comic writing legend, Dave Elliot, Jay Lender (SpongeBob Squarepants) and Micah Wright (Call of Duty: Black Ops II: Zombies).
