EA announces a new boxing game

EA Sports has announced a new game coming for the PS3, 360 and Wii called Facebreaker. Where the Fight Night series is the company’s sim representation of the sport, Facebreaker will be the arcade entry with a cartooney look all its own. Both Fight Night Round 4 and Facebreaker are being developed out of EA Canada with Facebreaker being the first of the two to be released.

The game features fictional boxers plus the ability to use “Game Face” which was first implemented with Tiger Woods 08. Touted is the “real-time facial deformation”.

Laugh out loud as you pummel your opponent with a barrage of blows to the face and watch in satisfaction as your progress is illustrated by real-time facial deformation. With haymakers, face shots and body blows, wait for the right moment to drop a super punch to make your presence known. Taunt your adversaries and flaunt your talent, by tying one hand behind your back to add ultimate humiliation to your bout. In FaceBreaker, it just feels good to rearrange your opponent’s face.

No word on when to expect Facebreaker to release other than it will be out sometime this year. More information and screenshots will be in the March edition of EGM so it won’t be long until more is known. The official website for the game is set to go live on Friday February 1st.

hmmmm.. could be interesting to see how the “gameface” is implemented to rework the “picture” into a cartoon character (assuming you’re talking about the loading of a real picture and strategically placing dots on the picture to determine the game characters face)…. we’ll see how well that conversion works. i LOVED the ability to load a picture into Tiger Woods 08 of myself and then place a few dots and create myself b/c it actually worked quite well!

Sad day in America!!! Dump a great dynast in “fight night” to persue a arcadish game. The sport of boxing really must be falling off big time if this is what has come of boxing.

Just think how dope a gamer face would have been in a actual fight night game?

This game could still be good but its not the same. Hopefully 2k’s boxing is more SIM-style

This is a smart move by EA, to avoid comparisons with Prizefighter, which will certainly crush the Fight Night series. Better for EA to go all arcade than to pretend to be a boxing sim.

I can see the big execs meeting at EA. “Ok guys, Fight Night Round 4 or Arcade Cartoony Boxing. Ah, let’s dump a great game that people still like even 2 years from release. Instead of improving on it and making it one of the best boxing games ever, let’s make a game the kids will enjoy.”

No they didn’t dump Fight Night. Round 4 is in development at EA Canada. It moved there before the EA Chicago closing as they worked on the PS3 version of Round 3. I added a line in the article now because of the confusion around that.

Anyone remember Ready 2 Rumble games for the Dreamcast? They didnt do very well and I dont think this will either. They were fun games for about an hour then not so much. Playing with friends yes but, hardcore gamers will laugh at it. I wish EA luck with this one. I love EA but, sometimes I dont understand them.

What do you think pasta? Do you remember the R2R games for the DC?

I remember them and having played them but not really anything specific about them. I can say though that Facebreaker is intriguing to me. Potentially it would be a game I’d enjoy more than the next Fight Night.

I’m glad to hear that FNR4 is still being made after all. When there’s competition, the gamers win. Also, it would be more fun with FNR4 around, Prizefighter would have a whipping boy.

I am glad to hear that fight night is still in developement. And I think this game will sell because the general gaming audience is not the SIM-style like most of us are.

Plus I think just the photo-face ability will have alot of people debating on picking it up. I think its a feature that shouild be on every game if possible.

I’m totally into sim boxing, but an arcade boxing game that doesn’t pretend to be a sim (FNR3) and is totally over the top would be fun.

It’s not a fad it’s a fact. Now they’re pulling out all the stops and showing their true colors, EA has always misrepresented the sports they are trying to portray, especially boxing.
