Padre’s Road to the Show Part One

So to kick off the Road to the Show I’ll have a brief recap of the beginnings of Padre’s career. The create-a-player is pretty deep but I didn’t spend too much time with it as I just wanted to get him looking somewhat like myself. Thanks to the poll yesterday Padre’s position will be shortstop with a secondary position of second base.

After flipping through the teams and competition at shortstop Padre decided to join the Washington Nationals organization. Spring Training starts up with him getting an opportunity to play and is slotted hitting eighth. It has been rough going early on as Padre has struggled in all facets of the game. Full concentration is required otherwise events such as getting picked off at first or forgetting to cover second base on steals and for double play attempts occur.

After the first five ST games Padre is batting .190 with 2 RBIs. He took his first opportunity to spend training points but given his struggles he could only work on power and contact slightly but hopefully that’ll help. The next update will probably come tomorrow and cover the rest of Spring Training and the start of the regular season.

Continue on to watch the videos. The first one has just a few highlights but the rest are the full play throughs which last around seven minutes each.

Can’t wait to play this tomorrow! I think I’m going to start my RTTS as a starter

This may have been asked already but..can you pick your own jerseys in franchise mode or does the game automaticly choose for you?

I think it is stupid that on defense you only play the actual plays that involve you. Why can’t the game be realistic and let you play the entire inning from your position? That way as a SS you’d have to be in position for cutoffs, and actually watch the action unfold.

It just seems scripted to me.

  4. Bumble14 on March 3rd, 2008 8:33 pm Quote

I guess to follow up on my scripted comment is how fun is that really going to be after a few weeks? Would it have been that had to play an entire inning? At least it gives the feeling that you are involved and not just competing in a series of mini games.

  5. Farmer on March 3rd, 2008 8:57 pm Quote

Wait, you can’t play the full inning on defense or watch other batters on your team.

Does it auto fast fWD???? I hope not, if i want realism, i want the real deal….not just few bits of a game…please advise Pasta P.

    thanks

    Well done, Pokey.

Great videos. Really looking forward to your impressions of this mode. From what I’m seeing in the videos, it looks pretty fun and engaging.

One question though: I see how in your RTTS career it FF’s to your next involvement in the game which I think is fine while you are in the minor league. However, when you actually make it the majors, are you able to play out the full game with your player at your position while the comp controls the pitcher and other players on defense and you only bat with your character? Or can you at least play a full game with the user controlling the pitcher and all batters–i.e. “normal mode”?

    Thanks!

figures, most of the people salivating over this game aren’t even familiar with the franchise…is the PS3 hurting that badly for a decent video game?

you have the option when playing your career mode to either do it this way (fast forward) or play regularly…MLB has been doing it this way for years people.

  9. Sean on March 3rd, 2008 11:23 pm Quote

Yeah i hope its only like that for the minors. I’m going to withhold from getting this game until I get this cleared up. That would be like in madden SS mode playing cb only being able to play when the ball is thrown to the guy your covering. I dont see how this can be fun

lol it looks like Pasta is frustrated the way hes swinging out there

i believe in rtts it is the same as last year and will fast forward to your players next play in every game minor or majors. i don’t have the game, but the team did say this will fast forward to your players next event all the time, not just in the minors.

i also don’t like that it does this which is one reason i won’t/don’t like road to the show mode at all. i just play franchise.

one thing i HATE about mlb08 the show is how much faster the ball is when you pitch it. even at the slowest setting it’s a lot faster then 07 the show and this totally ticks me off.

ahhhh. thats not good news Joe. Pasta is this mode fun.

I can understand why some of you guys would want to play the entire things through, but I’m certain the vast majority (which includes myself) wouldn’t. The whole point of the mode is to progress and advance your player. If each game were to take 30+ minutes that would take an eternity to do. Hell I even get frustrated when running the bases and waiting to get that part overwith. I couldn’t imagine standing in the field and having no action my way for long stretches of time.

It might be worth having as an option in RTTS, or a separate mode for single games (online would be fun that way in the mold of an online team play). But I agree with the method that is used as the default way to play RTTS.

Did you find baserunning to be hard? in the videos it looked like it was kinda hard to see your hit ball in the outfeild..any other camera issues you think will come up?

  15. thebrouhaha on March 4th, 2008 5:08 am Quote

If one participated in every single play it would also take years in life to see real development in your player. I love the game, but not THAT much. I do think it would be really cool if it was an option to play the entire game if you made it to the world series or something. Neat Idea guys.

yeah its tough to judge, although I think it automatically assists you to start running or hold up unless you override it with a command. I haven’t had much chance to find out how that works exactly.

  17. snowslope on March 4th, 2008 6:16 am Quote

Yea theres no way I would play if I had to sit through the entire game. I’d never get far enough along to make it to the Majors if it needed that much time invested.

  18. Bryan on March 4th, 2008 7:40 am Quote

Ahhh…interesting. I can see how some might find it boring to play and entire game from your position, unless you are the starting pitcher, I guess.

However, I can see this mode really taking off if they incorporated it into franchise mode. For instance, lets say you start a franchise with the tribe. And the you could create yourself or whomever, for RTTS. You could start playing out your franchise normally as well as RTTS with your player. Hopefully, at some point during the one of your seasons, your created player would get called up into the majors and automatically be placed on your bench. You could sub him into the lineups (with new Major League goals to be accomplished in order to keep your player up there). If you have some success you get to stay…if your’re not ready, its back to the minors for more improvement.

Eventually (hopefully), you would earn yourself a permanent spot on Cleveland’s roster…and your player would remain on that roster for the rest of the franchise…baring major slumps or injuries, in which case you would get temporarily sent down.

IMO this would make this game incredible and vastly increase the longevity of both modes. Once your initial player made it up, you could start a new RTTS with a different player at a new position, all the while, still having your franchise going for multiple seasons.

    What do you guys think?

    Peace

  19. Bumble14 on March 4th, 2008 8:22 am Quote

Sorry guys, but only being involved in plays that are hit to me on defense basically equates to a minigame to increase my players stats–it’s not a true career mode in my eyes. At least in Madden you are in on every play offensively and defensively. It adds a lot to the experience personally.

I don’t mind the game simming other at bats, but in the field you should be able to play the entire game-that way you never would know where the ball was being hit, and you would have to react like a real baseball player would- back up throws, cover certain bases, etc…it would be great.

  20. Sean on March 4th, 2008 9:37 am Quote

I agree with bumble. Like I said that would be like playing cb in SS mode only being on the field when the ball is thrown to the guy your covering. They should at least give u the option

  21. Farmer on March 4th, 2008 10:41 am Quote

So is it confirmed, there’s no “OPTION” to play the whole RTTS without auto fast-fwd??

Please advise, it seems theres a debate on peoples preferences, but i really want to know if you can or not before I purchase, It seems unclear. thanks!
