EA Sports has announced details of the 20th Anniversary Collector’s Edition of Madden 09. It will include NFL Head Coach 09, exclusive classic Madden gameplay, and bonus video content. The price of the set will be $89.99 and the release date has been set for August 12th.

Whether you prefer to make your moves on the field, from the sidelines or in the front office, the Madden NFL 09 20th Anniversary Collectors Edition has something for every football fan. Madden NFL 09 will feature the most immersive gameplay, the richest online offerings and the most comprehensive feature depth in the history of the franchise, while NFL Head Coach 09 has been reinvented to provide a unique new NFL experience by allowing fans to be in total control of their favorite franchises. The two games offer unique experiences and then can even interact with one another with gamers being able to import their user-designed plays from NFL Head Coach 09 and put them into Madden NFL 09 to create customized playbooks for complete control on the field.

Great to hear about interaction between the two titles. A lot of people will enjoy creating the plays in Head Coach and then being able to use them in Madden.

Sounds like a pretty good deal and one of the few times I would want to purchase a collector’s edition. No word on how much Head Coach will cost if purchased separately (I have doubts that it will end up being exclusive to the Madden CE) but getting it for essentially $30 presents great value and that isn’t even considering the other extras. The biggest problem will be finding time to play both games with them coming on the same day.

interesting that you leave out the main selling point of it. a full brand new game being included in Head Coach that will interact with Madden.

What a deal. Basically 2 games for 90$ and then videos and exclusive content. That is a great deal. I will be getting this August 12th at midnight.

Pretty good deal if you’re a fan of NFL Head Coach. However, them touting custom playbook imports doesn’t seem right when that used to be a feature on last-gen Madden. It’s nice that’s back but I just don’t think you should have to buy a separate game just to use an old feature.

Nice!!! I’m definitely gettin the CE!!! I think Madden09 will be so much better this year. One thing I would love to see is in-game pop-up player stats during gameplay.

Are you kidding me!?!? After last year’s incomplete buggy version I vowed never to blindly buy Madden again. I definitely wont be buying the Collector’s Edition, If I buy Madden @ all. I’ve competed in the past, have been in a league for over 10 years, which btw for the 1st time in 10 years was not run due to the franchise patch not being delivered until after the NFL season was over. I agree with the guy above and cannot believe that somebody would pay for this.

  12. Chew13 on March 27th, 2008 11:52 am Quote

Juan Pablo is right. EA just trying to sucker you into buying another game for what used to be a standard featured. For those that haven’t figured it out. NFL COACH is the same game engine as Madden so you are not getting two games they are just charging you extra for the same game played differently. It’s coach mode for crying out loud!!!

That game is nowhere near a “standard feature”

  15. jake-the-snake on March 27th, 2008 12:03 pm Quote

this is great news. i was planning to buy head coach for $60 so to be able to get it for $30 is awesome

  16. Eric on March 27th, 2008 12:06 pm Quote

So instead of just adding in a playbook editor that people have been asking to be included in the game for the last 5 years, they make it part of NFL Head Coach and essentially charge you $30 to edit playbooks? Should I assume that this means that EA will put no effort into redesigning the playbooks themselves again this year?

Let’s not forget that NFLHC was a terrible failure last year and everyone was disappointed by it. It sounded great on paper and looked good, but ultimately flopped. With EA’s track record, I wouldn’t count on this being a fantastic game with one year of work.

In fact, if EA thought it was going to be so good, they would have released it seperately and made $30 more dollars off selling it, while still including the option to export playbooks to Madden. The inclusion of NFLHC in a bundle tells me they don’t believe in the product and assume it will stink, so they are tossing it in with a guaranteed seller and making some extra money off it.

Watching people design all these money plays with the playbook editor that the AI can’t possibly keep up with will be tons of fun. The AI can’t handle the standard plays in Madden properly now, let alone when people start making their own. Yeah cheese!!

What about the Owner mode funtions of the franchise? Are those basically going to be removed and moved into the Head Coach game? If I want to manage my team, will I have to have the Collectors Edition?

For $90 the game better be fantastic on the field and have way better presentation than ever before. Already sounds like they are working on other stuff (coach integration) that doesn’t really effect gameplay.

Classic Madden would be cool if it actually had classic rosters. Old Madden games with current rosters is wack. I’d rather just play the originals.

I agree 100%. As totally and utterly craptastic as Head Coach was last year, it is definitly not a standard feature. It barely rates as being something worthy of purchase at all.

You don’t save $30 bucks if the product isn’t offered as a standalone anywhere else. It isn’t like NFLHC is going to be $60 seperately and $30 with Madden. You can only get it with Madden.

And until EA says otherwise, you are basically just paying $30 to import plays.

I won’t buy Madden until some sites that post actual user reviews, like this one, inform me that Madden isn’t crap. Last year, pretty much every major site lied and Madden sucked.

Keep it classy guys. I am with the original Ross poster…There are a bunch of 2K Fanboys on here. You basically paid $60 for a FAKE football game, with no real teams and legends. Backbreaker, and Tecmo Bowl will not have real players so that also is not a good argument.

  24. Darkheath on March 27th, 2008 12:40 pm Quote

Well.. i was actually more interested in HC anyway. But I will not buy an EA game without reading reviews from Pasta and others. I’ve heard people call Pasta a “fanboy”, but he seems pretty straight up to me.

I am somewhat of a Collector’s Edition whore (Mass Effect, Gears of War, Perfect Dark, Splinter Cell, Assassin’s Creed, etc), so if I were to get a Madden game it would definitely be the CE. As a matter of fact, I just picked up a used copy of Madden 07 HoF edition. The 2K game still feels more “natural” to me… but I kind of like playing Madden as an OLiner. It’s a completely different way to play the game.

I agree with your “keep it classy” comment. But you are WAY off base saying it’s a FAKE football game. Some of us older guys don’t give a damn about the the hip-hop/me-me-me world of the NFL players. The APF game is still the most realistic football game I’ve played, despite not having “real” <<<( read: egotistical NFL whinebags) players.

Actually it is pretty cool to play with players I grew up with and even older guys you know were playing for the LOVE OF THE GAME. None of the guys in the APF game ever sat out of training camp and the first few games of the season because $7mil/year was NOT ENOUGH money to PLAY a game where you are idolized across the country.

  26. pastapadre on March 27th, 2008 12:51 pm Quote

I’m generally pretty optimistic towards games prerelease, until I’m given a reason not to be. Last year as soon as I played it I was somewhat down on the game because of the number of fumbles, injuries, ridiculous kickoff power, and poor offensive line play. Then came the frustrating online problems. If those things (or others like it) are apparent again I’ll be vocal about it.

Head Coach is a lot more than just a play creator. You can check out the links below for a little background, but EA also plans on putting out more videos and info over the coming weeks. But hey if you aren’t interested in HC then pass on the CE. If its vice versa I suspect we’ll see a standalone version of Head Coach as EA won’t just leave that potential $ on the table. I would imagine copies will be found via other avenues such as Ebay also. Of course whether it’ll end up living up to its potential we don’t know yet.

As to the other football games they’re huge unknowns. The latest news on Tecmo Bowl is it will be a Wii title so that isn’t going to be significant then. Backbreaker has six guys (yes thats the size of the team) working on the game and it at least sounded like it was headed towards being a downloadable title a while back. You just can’t expect much from a first attempt with unproven technology and limited resources.

  27. Darkheath on March 27th, 2008 12:52 pm Quote

Of course… the biggest hit to APF was the lack of a franchise mode. That’s why I’m thinking Head Coach will be more interesting to me. Hopefully they will be good this year… finally.

  28. Darkheath on March 27th, 2008 12:54 pm Quote

BTW Pasta.. just wanted to say I do appreciate your honesty. I think it’s good to be optimistic going in, but realistic in the evaluation.

2.) did i misunderstand it, or did it say that the collector’s edition will have better gameplay??

  30. bhurst99 on March 27th, 2008 1:13 pm Quote

I’ve never been one to make plays in the old Madden games but I’m sure for some it will be a big selling point. I hope there is more integration with Head Coach. It would be great if during a franchise you could play your games using Madden and during the week you conducted your business using Head Coach.

I don’t know if anyone here remembers two old EA Sports PC games called FIFA 2004 and Total Club Football 2004 (I may have that last name wrong.) The two soccer titles could be used together. You would fire up Total Club Football and train your team during the week, meet with players, scout new players, set up exhibition matches, buy ads for your stadium, expand your stadium, set ticket prices, spend you salary as coach on new homes, cars, etc. It was insane the amount of stuff you could do off the pitch. When it came time to actually play your games you would put in the Fifa 04 disk and play using the FIFA engine.

When the game was over you would put back in the Total Club disk and all the results and stats from the FIFA played game would appear in Total Club. It worked really well.

Unfortunately, for the next edition, FIFA 2005, the two became incompatible (despite what it said on the back of the box on Total Club 2005). It was a great idea ruined by EA. So you might want to wait for the reviews of the CE edition of Madden to make sure the import play call feature works smoothly.

  31. r00tabaga on March 27th, 2008 1:27 pm Quote

I thought the idea of APF2k was great, but the lack of real teams really hurt the experience. Would EA ever consider a similar game? I know they used to include classic teams and players w/last gen Maddens. I know alot of the retired NFL players could use the $$$ since their pensions are so small and EA owns the NFL license so a seperate title would be awesome. All-Time Cowboys w/ T.O.,Herschel,Aikman,etc. -or- 90′ Bills w/Kelly, Thurman,Bruuuuuuce, etc. ONLINE!!!

I believe it may have to do with 15 versions (2005) of Madden vs 20 years (2009) since it started. Wasn’t there a year where Madden wasn’t released? I don’t think I’ve seen specific explanation on this but that would be my thinking behind it.

I am looking at the features they just posted.

Trade Live Event. You and a few GM’s sit at a table and discuss trades, there is a timer so it adds pressure.

75 Player Rosters, with the ability to cut it down to 53 and have 45 on the active roster.

Future Draft Picks. You can now trade your draft picks in 2009, and 2010.

    CPU Controlled Trades.

    In-Season Scouting.

    Coach Bidding Live Event.

    Player Bonuses.

These are some of the things I found to be amazing additions and I feel this game has the potential to be great. EA has really listened to the community’s feedback, and has put in the things we have been wanting for so long!

Is there information different from what was already on the Head Coach site? Looks to me like it just links over to the HC site.

My main concern is if they pulled the owners mode and franchise modes from Madden and stuck them in Head Coach, I’ll be livid and probably storm EA’s office myself.

    Approval Rating.

    Active Sideline.

Emotional Reactions. Your QB just threw an INT! Are you going to take it calmly like Tony Dungy or throw a fit like Jon Gruden?

Quick Subs. Do you feel Darren McFadden should play WR or Champ Bailey at WR? just press a button!

Those features are part of Head Coach. Nowhere does it mention that those features will be a part of Madden or that what you do in Head Coach with them will effect your Madden team.

I find it a slap in the face that they state that those features have been requested for years and they are finally including them. They should just be in Madden.

Whoa. Reread what I typed, I wasn’t bashing Madden or NFL Head Coach just they way they market their “new features”. Fact is I am I fan of video games, sports, and obviously sports video games. Whether that game be made by 2K or EA I don’t care. If you read what I posted I said it’s a great deal for fans of both series. However, IN MY OPINION having create a play (which had been a feature for a long time in Madden) taken from Madden and added to another series, THEN use that as an insentive for Madden fans to buy Head Coach isn’t right.

No, I think it might be half-assed because it lacks features that EA has included with Head Coach that should just be in Madden.

If I were to buy Madden, I want the Madden experience to be the same for 95% of the game. I don’t want a bunch of things to be exclusive to the Collectors Edition.

To continue the example, I don’t want the collectors edition to have a better draft, free agent period, and trades just becaue Head Coach is included. I don’t want lame, dumbed down versions of these in the non-CE version of Madden.

    Make sense?

I believe he’s a remnant from the 2K Football series.

    Hey Pasta,

When is the earliest you can get any info on gameplay, features, or any new improvements to the game. I really hope the presentation is up to par. It felt like I was eating dry toast when I won the Suer Bowl no substance at all.

I only hope EA took in consideration how the gameplay was on the last-gen game along with the menu set-up.

You basically paid $60 for a FAKE football game, with no real teams and legends.

And I would do it again in a heartbeat. Madden 08 was more “fake” than APF 2K8.

Gameplay is more important than the NFL license. People may like to bench press in Madden, but I’m spending money to play a realistic football game. I don’t need NFL logos. While Madden fans were waiting months for a patch to make the game playable, I was enjoying a true simulation.

I’m not sure. I would think there will be a community or media event but they may just combine it with Madden’s so we’ll see on that. I’ll let you know when I know more.

It’s hilarious how there are people in here doing their very best extinguish the excitement of those who are looking forward to the game(s).

There’s going to be plenty of opportunity to bury or praise the game; fairly, after you’ve actually played it. Attempting to do so now reflects more on you than it does the game.
