MLB 2K8 patch for 360 out now
April 7, 2008 by pastapadre

The MLB 2K8 patch that is intended to improve the framerate and fix the Padres lineup glitch in franchise mode has gone live for the 360. It is unknown when the Padres fix for the PS3 will be coming. Although the turnaround of getting the patch out a month after release is relatively quick, and actually suggests the patch was being worked on prior to release of the game, the situation was still terribly mishandled.
I was able to get some time in with the game post patch and once I play some more I’ll have a full write-up late this evening. My initial finding is that the framerate may have improved slightly however it still isn’t consistent and smooth once the ball is hit into play. It doesn’t seem to be quite as severe but is still evident and bothersome. Cut scenes still pause during the transition back to live gameplay. From the few minutes I tried online that seems to play a little more reasonably which is encouraging.
What are your experiences with the patch? Is the framerate significantly better now? Has online play improved? Leave your thoughts in the comments.

All I care about is online leagues and I just hope that the lag in the online batter/pitcher interface is fixed “at least a little”…I’ll be firing this one up tonight beaches!
Got a game in this morning - IMO I thought the gameplay was very smooth, not that I thought it was horrific to begin with. Only chop I noticed at all was on a couple bloop singles -
The post game highlight show is now actually viewable, although still choppy
Can’t really comment much on the cutscenes as I have those turned off, but the replays ran fine
Hopefully everyone can move on and focus on the merits of the game at this point
Hey Pasta, any word on 2k doing a much-needed roster update soon? Thx again for the heads up.
Hahaha finally! Thanks a lot Pasta for the updates. You do a great job with this site!
There is a noticeable difference with the patch in online play. When pitching you know how you get the white flash in the pitching vortex when you nail your release point in the small green portion? Well before the patch I was hitting that perfect release point and seeing the white flash about 20% of the time. Now with the patch I’m hitting that spot around 60% of the time. My pitching has become dead- on. Same goes for the competition. I’m seeing significantly fewer missed pitches and meatballs. This game has gotten back to where it should be. You really have to concentrate and follow the ball with your eye as opposed to just waiting for a mistake pitch. I expect users to be playing this game at a much higher level now.
Hey Pasta in your full write-up tonight can you include whether or not a roster update is coming out/if you have heard that more player profiles are going to be included in it please. I haven’t checked online yet so maybe it is already out and im just an idiot, but if not I’d appreciate some info on it. Thanks for the updates.
How do you get the patch?
if you have xbox live, just turn your game on…
Pasta, I know that they will be doing like 5 roster updates this year and the patch is now out, but CAN they do player portrait update???

They can yes, but whether they will is another story.

Don’t have any specific info on that but I know they were shooting for a opening day update so its possible that’ll be out this week or next.
Patch fixed the gameplay perfectly, online is down roster update might be coming out soon.

Yeah. I want to start my franchise with fairly realistic opening day rosters. As a cardinals fan I would like them to get some of the player races correct.
Thanks for the info Pasta. Hey at least the patch is out now, I’ll take it.
Hey, pasta although my xbox 360 is not here yet (broken), I have MLB 2k8 so the patch will be in the xbox marketplace or where? please answer ASAP

You just pop the game in and it will prompt you to download the update.
I download the patch this morning and after playing some games i can say that the framerate is better, although i don’t believe its still at 60 FPS. I haven’t tried online play, but one thing i did notice was the collision detection may have been a bit better too…
I
I think the online lag is much better
WOW!!! Much better. Thax Pasta…
I’m always awe-struck by how good the MLB 2K8 screens look. I only have a PS3 and am playing The Show, but if they were to fix it so it ran well on the PS3 I’d be interested in checking it out just for the different control style. The new analog pitching seems interesting.
60 FPS is 60 FPS, it’s not EA’s 60 FPS is faster than 2K’s, 60 dollars for the game is 60 dollars. The game is not at 60 FPS, while offline is much smoother, the online is barely playable due to the pitching is not accurate for the lag. I am seriously considering returning this game now after regarding highly of it due to the fact that there will never be another patch. Obviously their 1 hour testing originally didn’t work so why not ask the fans for a list of all the problems/glitches and let’s really get them fixed. Instead they test it for one more hour and nothing more. EA’s games have never had a problem online despite what pasta says, if you have broadband and your opponent does, I have never had lag in an Madden, Live or anything and they run as smooth as any game could get on top of picture perfect graphics.
Let’s be honest. At HD resolutions, 2k8 was running at 20-25 frames per second pre-patch if that. Post-patch, if it is at 30 FPS, be happy.
When you guys post your results, you need to post what screen resolution you are playing at, so we can compare apples to apples.
Since I saw a noticeable difference between 1080i and 720P, you need to state what res you are running at. It appears there are quite a few who are still playing at 480.
It almost appears the target resolution for 2k8 to run smooth at all is 480.
With the analog controls this year, a smooth framerate was of utmost significance to make the game work as intended.
Also, a patch to eliminate meatball pitches EVERY time you screw up on your pitch is needed. How about a pitch in the dirt or outside or high or even hitting the batter. Being penalized so harshly for missing your timing is not realistic. It is one thing to hang a breaking ball once in awhile, but this is ridiculous.
Sidewinder I play at 720P and the framerate for me is smooth - not silky Always-At-60, but certainly smooth and not an issue at this point
As for the meatball - lord knows I have had meatballs thrown into the dirt, and have hit a batter or two. Have also struck out a few batters (two today) on meatballs …
As for Birthday Boy - 2K mods have already confirmed another patch is coming to address issues further, and that the roster update is probably about 1-2 weeks away
Link to this? After playing this enough I need to make a list of what they should fix, and honestly they could take all the time they need to get it right.

Good deal. I play the 2k8 demo at 720P on the 360, but it has not been nearly as smooth as 2k7 is with all the fixes at 1080i. I have played a 100+ games on 2k7, but it didnt really shine for me until late June 07 when the patches came out. I was able to use the sliders to eliminate HR robbing catches by slowing down the Outfielder speed and I also cut way down on all the HRs. Using the Swing Stick made the game alot more realistic too, but the Checkswing is broken in 2k games, especially compared to The Show 08. That is done to perfection.
As for the meatballs, is this after the patch? On the demo, all the meatballs go right over the middle of the plate and either get crushed for HRs or freeze the batter and he takes it for a strike.
2k needs to apply the new patch to the demo(put out a new demo), so we can see if it made a big difference, too.

What? It’s a bit better, but by no means perfect. Either that or you are extremely easy to please.
Also, wow, the lag in getting a roster update to us is inexcusable as well.
It takes less horse power to render 1080i (interlaced) as opposed to 720p. 1080p is another story altogether. Ive tested @ 720p & 1080p and both seem the same to me.
My beef is w/ online play. It is utterly unplayable. Baseball is not an all guessing game. Sure I can guess offspeed or fastball, but there is absolutely no time to judge one or the other after the ball comes out of the pitchers hand. Im headed back to cod4.
Next year Ill wait a few months in before I jump the gun. IGN was useless this year for a review. They didnt even mention how shitty online was. Atleast Gamespot (despite their recent track record) were constructive in their review. Ill just read the 2kboards before I buy next year.
What batting camera do u guys use??? I use Wide Zoom @ 100% Zoom…

You would be wrong on the 1080i. 1080i is 1920×1080 resolution. 720 is only 1280×720. Do the math. Alot more pixels being pushed with 1080.
And yes pre-patch, 720P played more smoothly than 1080i for obvious reasons.
720P is only better for very fast motion sports. However, I still prefer 1080i for viewing over it. More pixels means more on-screen info and a cleaner picture. Basic common sense.
“actually suggests the patch was being worked on prior to release of the game”
And how would you know that? Take another shot a 2K…
Sidewinder, 1080i is 1920×540 (every frame.) 1080p is 1920×1080 (every frame.) But Im wrong as far as horsepower goes, 1920×540 = 1,036,800 pixels.1280 x 720 = 921,600 pixels.
Oh geez Baandje, no one is taking shots at 2k. Only facts. I remember you from the 2k boards and you were a straight up fanboy. They did have a patch in the works prior to the release, maybe not for all the bugs they eventually found, but they did. They knew they needed that game out and the amount of time it would have took to fix all those bugs and then press discs would have lost them alot of $$.

Hahaha what a joke. Do you really think 2K didn’t know about the problems this game had when it released? Don’t hammer Pasta for telling it like it is just because your boyfriend works at 2K.
Can I get some honest opinions? Is the game worth buying now that the patch is out? I only have a 360 and don’t plan to play most of my games online.
yes, its good offline. online is a different story but if u like baseball games u should enoy it.
Framerate is better, without a doubt. But total control pitching is still not fixed. Everytime I didn’t motion the right stick correctly, I still ended up throwing a meatball in the strike zone. How about some randomness when I don’t correctly throw a pitch? How about just throwing it out of the zone, or a wild pitch, or a hit batter every now and then?
Pasta I know you commented on this earlier in the week but can you please try to find out some info on if a roster update is coming because I just don’t want to wait two weeks to start my franchise and then find out that 2K is waiting until the all-star break to release their next roster update. I’m not trying to be a jerk here because I think you do a tremendous job with this site I’m just trying to find out from somewhere, anywhere, when the next roster update is “scheduled” to be released. Any information at all would be VERY much appreciated, thanks.
Pasta where is the “late evening” full write*up?
Roster update???
