Brett Favre is the Madden 09 cover athlete

April 24, 2008 by pastapadre

He may be retired but Brett Favre is the cover athlete for Madden NFL 09. This is the first time a non-active player has been selected for the cover. The news comes out of an appearance on the David Letterman show tonight (which tapes earlier in the day) and has been confirmed by GameDaily. There is also a show on the NFL Network scheduled for Saturday at 10am ET that will showcase the history of Brett Favre and the Madden franchise. The official press release is expected Friday morning.

It is fitting that Favre will represent the 20th Anniversary of Madden. His long and storied career can be revisted in the same manner that EA Sports will be doing with the 20th anniversary of Madden.

he could be in as a historic player. remember they have guys like Barry Sanders in the game. so you could be able to play with him in that way at least

Don’t forget that Brett Favre hasn’t officially submitted his retirement papers to the NFL yet and was quoted saying that if the conditions were right where he would be needed (ie Aaron Rodgers gets hurt or is Abysmal) he would be open to returning to the Packers. So with that in mind it is still possible that the much heralded “Madden Curse” in fact could affect Brett Favre.

Sorry to spoil your fun Packer fan.

Hmm, Madden was on the cover for the 1st 10yrs or so and you weren’t able to play with him either.

According to the Facebook site for Madden NFL 09, the cover athlete is expected to be announced on April 25. Moreover, a quick check of the CBS schedule for Late Show with David Letterman shows that Favre is going to appear as one of Dave’s guests tonight (April 24). For the past few years, EA has used late-night shows to announce the Madden cover. Last year Jimmy Kimmel’s show was used to announce Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young for Madden 08.

That’s where GameDaily gets their info, Facebook? Tomorrow was supposed to be a big event and now all the info is ruined due to this.

Just a side note Bret Favre will be the only white guy other than John Madden to be on the Madden Cover. Just thought it was interesting. Especially since there have been four quarterbacks on the cover, the only position that seems to be predominately white. Again not racist just thought was interesting.

    1. Not a packer fan
    2. Retirement papers don’t make a difference besides it being official that he retired. You can unretire the same way right in the middle of the season.
    3. Even if Farve was to come back he isn’t going to miss a game because of injury.

Huh??? I find that totally baffling. The Madden cover usually ties into the new big feature of the game in some way. What is the new feature this year?? Retirement mode?? Ability to throw into triple coverage for INTs?

How does having a player that doesn’t do a lot of press, doesn’t go to parties, doesn’t play video games, and ISN’T CURRENTLY PLAYING IN THE NFL help promote your game in anyway?

Why not just slap Madden on the cover for the 20th edition? That makes 100x more sense than this.

EA is more clueless than ever. Sounds to me like they signed a deal with Farve already and then he retired and they are too lazy or unable to back out of it.

Regardless, it is what is inside the cover that counts most….

How about he’s been the face of football for over a decade? Name another player that would promote Madden any better (as if they need to use a cover athlete to sell the game, people would buy it if they put Ryan Leaf on the cover).
