Brett Favre is the Madden 09 cover athlete
April 24, 2008 by pastapadre

He may be retired but Brett Favre is the cover athlete for Madden NFL 09. This is the first time a non-active player has been selected for the cover. The news comes out of an appearance on the David Letterman show tonight (which tapes earlier in the day) and has been confirmed by GameDaily. There is also a show on the NFL Network scheduled for Saturday at 10am ET that will showcase the history of Brett Favre and the Madden franchise. The official press release is expected Friday morning.
It is fitting that Favre will represent the 20th Anniversary of Madden. His long and storied career can be revisted in the same manner that EA Sports will be doing with the 20th anniversary of Madden.

Good stuff
I saw this coming a mile away.
Cue John madden loves Favre joke
Very disappointing.
i thought da birthday boy guaranteed it was fred taylor or david garrard? lol
I love it great news. Brett Farve is great choice for cover athlete and there won’t be any injury due to the madden curse.
I love it!!!!!!!! old school baby

Lmao…Da Birthday Boy is hilarious.
How is he going to be on the cover when you won’t be able to play with him in the game.
sigh… just a plain disappointment

No way. This is great. Now AD doesn’t have to go on the cover and worry about the “curse.”
T-Dogg wrote:
he could be in as a historic player. remember they have guys like Barry Sanders in the game. so you could be able to play with him in that way at least

Don’t forget that Brett Favre hasn’t officially submitted his retirement papers to the NFL yet and was quoted saying that if the conditions were right where he would be needed (ie Aaron Rodgers gets hurt or is Abysmal) he would be open to returning to the Packers. So with that in mind it is still possible that the much heralded “Madden Curse” in fact could affect Brett Favre.
Sorry to spoil your fun Packer fan.

Hmm, Madden was on the cover for the 1st 10yrs or so and you weren’t able to play with him either.
According to the Facebook site for Madden NFL 09, the cover athlete is expected to be announced on April 25. Moreover, a quick check of the CBS schedule for Late Show with David Letterman shows that Favre is going to appear as one of Dave’s guests tonight (April 24). For the past few years, EA has used late-night shows to announce the Madden cover. Last year Jimmy Kimmel’s show was used to announce Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young for Madden 08.
That’s where GameDaily gets their info, Facebook? Tomorrow was supposed to be a big event and now all the info is ruined due to this.
Just a side note Bret Favre will be the only white guy other than John Madden to be on the Madden Cover. Just thought it was interesting. Especially since there have been four quarterbacks on the cover, the only position that seems to be predominately white. Again not racist just thought was interesting.
At least one thing hasn’t been announced and that’s the broadcast team being announced tomorrow, Earl happened to unaware of this pick and in a total opposite direction, sorry if he let you down.
Great choice! Hopefully he announces he will be back for one more year tonight on Letterman!
I’d cross out Gumbel as the announcer since he turned his announcing duties over to someone else on the NFL Network.

1. Not a packer fan
2. Retirement papers don’t make a difference besides it being official that he retired. You can unretire the same way right in the middle of the season.
3. Even if Farve was to come back he isn’t going to miss a game because of injury.
Well they will be tomorrow, and Earl already knows who they are.
Madden 96 had two white players on the box cover.

Huh??? I find that totally baffling. The Madden cover usually ties into the new big feature of the game in some way. What is the new feature this year?? Retirement mode?? Ability to throw into triple coverage for INTs?
How does having a player that doesn’t do a lot of press, doesn’t go to parties, doesn’t play video games, and ISN’T CURRENTLY PLAYING IN THE NFL help promote your game in anyway?
Why not just slap Madden on the cover for the 20th edition? That makes 100x more sense than this.
EA is more clueless than ever. Sounds to me like they signed a deal with Farve already and then he retired and they are too lazy or unable to back out of it.
I Wish he was going he was on it
Brett my boy there we go Go Packer!!! Pac attack!
Perfect choice. And they haven’t always picked someone with a new feature in the game. Just some years. I’m still pretty convinced that Madden himself will be on the collector’s edition. That’s how they did it in 2007 with the Hall of Fame edition.
I’m also VERY glad that it isn’t Adrian Peterson. I like that guy.

Perhaps this is their way of saying that everything that we know and loved about the Madden series is coming back. A retro Madden —> Think Madden 05 meets Madden Next Gen. One can only hope anyways.
Haha My Bad youbewrong I didn’t realize.
I like Favre but I was hoping EA would go classic with John Madden on the cover. So, in a way, it is disappointing.
Will the Collector’s Edition have a different cover?
I would have preferred a collage of all of the past covers with Madden busting through (to hide the Vick cover).
Regardless, it is what is inside the cover that counts most….

How about John Madden sitting in his office with ALL of the games sitting on his desk and on the shelves with him looking amazed at a pitbull tearing apart the 2004? Vick game.
I’d buy that.

Hey Monkey it was a type-o.Dummy
omg da birthday boy u act like u run everything just stop and this so gay no disrespect to favre but active players belong on da cover
I’m a dummy because no one can understand you? I still don’t know what you were trying to say.
Monkeys are fun. Here’s some poo. *fling*
Eric wrote:
How about he’s been the face of football for over a decade? Name another player that would promote Madden any better (as if they need to use a cover athlete to sell the game, people would buy it if they put Ryan Leaf on the cover). Besides, Favre is, at least presumably, Madden’s favorite player.
The Favre retirement act got old years ago - along with the canonization.
I really don’t care one way or another, but I am beginning to think I’m being tailed by someone at EA who is learning all my likes and dislikes - then forwards info to headquarters so they can annoy me further
It should have been Adrian Peterson or Shaun Taylor since he died ya’know
this is some bull…
Is this a subtle way of EA saying that the Injury feature is disabled???? j/k
test
DEF not Taylor then you would have to put the other 4 or 5 NFL Players that died in the past 2 years on the cover

How can you tell “you” a kid. Is it from my articulate writing skills and command of our native language? I may be a kid (I will not deny that)… but I’ve been around the sun 41 times.
i might actually buy this now.

WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The announce team has been announced. Troy Aikman and Joe Buck will get the honors for madden O9. Madden himself will be in the game but will be used for the tutorials while Chris Berman and Tom Jackson will do the pre/post game studio stuff.
JUST KIDDING…….DID I GET YOU???????
Tim…
that would be pretty sweet. They have the whole stable of ESPN announcers and have done NOTHING with them nor the license itself. Four years after 2K5 and I’m pretty sure we will still not see anything as impressive.
2k5’s halftime show and weekly rundown were top-notch and (very apparently) way ahead of it’s time.
A silent tear for the demise of the franchise. :’(

Madden will be “used in a way you wouldn’t expect” so you have no idea basically because you wouldn’t expect it.
Announcers should be exciting tomorrow.
That is a great move. Good for both sides!
Also looks like Madden will definitely have online leagues this year, as well as confirmed ability to save replays, a lot more major features are coming in the next couple days , check out the details :
askearl360.blogspot.com
last year…vince young leaked his coverboy status a few days early also…so with favre expected to be on letterman tonight…i dont think this was unexpected by EA…favre should be the cover athlete…let’s just hope that the madden jinks will cuz his retirement plans to go up in smoke…haha…
No one notices the online leagues?
New feature must be the ability to bluff your retirement every off season.
It’s too bad that such a legendary player is going to grace the cover of a game that will surely be terrible. If Madden 08 is any indication of what 09 will be…we’re all doomed.
This is a decent choice.

ehh i’ve seen that post a week or so ago, the question was actually asked by a member of my league. Still doesn’t say anything for sure though.
Well, it is the 20th Anniversary game, and who’s a better person to put on the cover than someone who has been in all but 2 Madden games.

Earl knows everything Madden 09, literally.
HAHAHA. This is hilarious. EA puts “Moonwalking” Brett Favre on the cover. Glitchfest Playmaker is the new feature. The all new special dance glitch feature this year. Hahaha. They wont have hand towels, but will add glitter gloves, and highwater tights.
I was being sarcastic.
I called this on themaddenlab forums, i said favre or taylor would be on the cover
Great pick!
Horrible decision. Why put someone that isn’t even in the game on the cover? Makes no sense. Should have been Tom Brady or Randy Moss. They did way more than Favre did last season. EA once again needs to step it up. WOW. Looks like I’m going to change my cover as soon as I get the game.
I hate the Packers. But, I respect Brett Favre. I loved watching him play, especially in that overtime game on MNF in Denver with the 60-yd TD pass for the win. I mean, if he was a Bear, I’d love him even more, but as long as he was in a Packer jersey, I couldn’t stand him, but I respected him. In all, good choice EA, I’m proud to have him on my box.

As a Rams fan for years… thats exactly how I felt about Joe Montana and Jerry Rice. Augh!!! The Niners beat the Rams 18 times in a row!!! Augh… I hate them guys!!! But damn are they good… and most importantly… up-standing citizens and role models. I wish more were like them these days.
Oh… and for what it’s worth… I wish Moss or Owens or Chad J. was on the cover this year, too. Maybe then the Madden Curse could get rid of those nutsacks.

that was pretty cool…actually gave me goose-bumps. sick favre good choice
Brett Favre is the man. This is the best choice EA could have made. Period.

the website won’t load for nothing!!!
It loads now
it was getting hit hard last night
I guess we’ll get some ben-gay to go with the game since Favre is the cover athelete.
The cover looks sweet….If EA was going classic they could have used Eric Hipple or Vince Evans…
What if Favre gets injured in a freak fishing accident ? Would that count ?
this is a great choice…
worst choice ever………i would rather have a blank cover than brett favre
you cant play as him and hes not even good…..
*sigh* ANDRIAN PETERSON ALL THE WAY
Farve sucks it should have been Sean Taylor
