NFL Head Coach 09 blog on playbooks
May 5, 2008 by pastapadre

A new producer blog on the NFL Head Coach 09 website has provided a ton of new information in relation to playbooks and team styles. You can read it in full here.
We stripped each playbook down to really focus on what is core to it’s parent NFL team. Our intent from the start was to make the style of each coach and team evident in the plays they call. We wanted to highlight things like the Tony Dungy Cover 2 defense, which is not only run by the Colts and Bucs, but is also being used all over the league. We have the New England Patriots offense lining up in Shotgun 5 wide formation about 60-70% of the time just like they did in 2007.
The blog not only details the work they put into getting the teams and coaches to run their real life schemes and how you can utilize them through who you hire, but also goes into “learning” which is a new player rating, adaptive play calling, and details some of the team specific ideals that will be represented.
From the start they have made it clear that players fitting into particular systems would be an important aspect which is something not seen in previous football games. Now there are the specifics on how you can shape your team and how your opponents will theirs as well. It looks like they have really gone and created a deep system that has a lot of potential.

Everyone wants to write this game off as a mere spin-off of Maddens franchise-mode. While Madden and NCAA are adding end-zone dances and mascot games, Headcoach is trying to gives us an authentic gaming experience with the kind of depth I’d expect from a next-gen game.
I’m telling you right now, this game will be the best football game released this year.
This game is shaping up to be the best football game, possibly ever. And OMG, bringing the option to the NFL. Praise the lawd! Now I’ve got a hard decision to make: after year one, bring Martz to Washington or bring up the fake Urban Meyer. Decisions, decisions. I am pumped for this game. Finally an awesome coaching sim (last HC wasn’t bad, but wasn’t very good). My only complaint is no PC version. Boo…
Fort, screw you for ruining SF in your career mode and bringing Martz to DC

that’s hilarious…
that being said…what are the chances of these play calling schemes and tendencies being in madden as well this year…my mind is saying that it would make sense if they found a way to do it in head coach…but my heart is telling me i am in for a MAJOR letdown…
man they better of done the same thing with the madden playbooks. They haven’t changed at all for like 4 years
Guys, go back and read the hype about the last Head Coach title - that too sounded like the greatest football title ever. Thankfully I read other’s impressions before I picked it up, because most people didn’t play it more than once or twice.
It’ll take more than a feature list to get me excited about this game after the last screw up they released under the same title.
It SOUNDS great. But EA has lost all good faith from my end after the past 2 years. I will have to see it (at least impressions, reviews) to believe it.
I’ve been wanting this in madden for a long time. Why can’t this be in madden.
so an EA football game will actually have DOUBLE REVERSES AND END AROUNDS AND FLANKER SCREEN QB FLEAFLICKERS now!!!
People like this Groundhog always has to find something to moan about cccc.
i think the way EA has this game set up is really good, i just hope it transfers to madden. this new playbook setup is what i have been yelling for years . i really hope they put a true west coast offense playbook in this year, cuz the last 4 years have been subpar.

Did you play the first version of this title? I’m guessing not.
Looking forward to the release date, I know the EA staff has put a lot into the game! D. Moore ” Battle Cat” is the man!
