NCAA Football 09 demo now available

June 19, 2008 by pastapadre

The demo for NCAA Football 09 is now available for the Xbox 360 and as of this afternoon it is up for the PS3. The demo features LSU vs Ohio State and a mascot game with the Gators vs Longhorns. Both games have two minute quarters and are played on varsity difficulty level.

Feel free to leave your impressions of the demo in the comments or discuss the game in the forum. I’ll be posting up some videos from the demo this evening along with thoughts in general after the significant hands-on time I’ve gotten out of the two community events.

I woke up this morning at 6:30 to download it and play a game before I went to work. I like it. The main thing that I noticed about the game is the speed. The game is much faster this year which I like. I also LOVE how you can break off an animation and go into another one….that is really cool. Other than that….the graphics are pretty much the same which doesn’t bother me all that much as long as the gameplay is solid that is all that matters. Overall, I think the finished product will be great.

Good to see that initial reaction seems very positive, which is reflective of the feelings at the community event despite some of the issues detailed by myself and others. If people stay this pleased with NCAA then they are going to be blown away by Madden.

Not a NCAA fan - not gonna buy it

But downloaded the demo to take a look and man - it sure is pretty. Real pretty.

Best Looking Football Game Ever Pretty

I also think the average game score will be 76-62 given the “wide open” design and speed crank they’ve given it

  23. pastapadre on June 19th, 2008 8:48 am Quote

Generally 2-3pm pacific is when PSN updates their store on Thursdays. I don’t think its a coincidence that the demo release falls on a Thursday when the 360 generally gets demos on Tuesdays. They wanted to be uniform with the release of it, EA seemed to submit it extra early so that a specific date would be set. Normally you don’t see EA or 2K give a date because of the uncertainty but they got it cleared and set ahead of time.

and I really didn’t have a problem with my front 4 getting pressure, I had maybe 2 sacks and like 4 or 5 hurries with my D-line.

  27. pastapadre on June 19th, 2008 9:03 am Quote

Yeah this is something that the community leaders are trying to decipher. From what I’ve been reading the pass rush in the demo is respectable, which wasn’t the case at the events. I’m hoping to find out what build/point in development the demo is based on. We were told we were playing the near final build a few weeks back and that no real changes could be made at that point. Considering the time it takes to build the demo and get it certified I’d imagine the demo was actually pre-event.

Ross I noticed that as well, just a bug, shouldn’t be a big deal

As for my impression of the demo… I am really ready to see the final product and then Madden.

The look of the game didn’t seem that much different from last years imo (I really wish they would change the crowd though lol)

The feel was SO MUCH BETTER. It really feels and plays great, even just being a demo. Playing a def lineman was a lot better and the branching animations felt smooth.

Looking forward to the full version should be good fun!

According to an OSU fan over at OS:

” OSU has NO fullback coming into the next year, and Curtis Terry (ROLB#55) right now is the leader at that position. Dexter Larrimore’s amazing meteoric rise up the depth chart that appeared earlier in footage from Steve and other guys out there was finally sorted out to how it should be (#3 DT). Pryor is #2 most likely because he will see time in gimmick packages much more than Henton, (the guy who would have been the #2 QB) so that is fairly accurate.”

Demo plays well. Interesting “glitch” had a LSU player injured on the last play of the 1st quarter. The players left the field with him lying on the ground and as the camera pulled back between quarters he was still just lying all by himself on the field. However when the 2nd quarter started he was gone.

  48. Gotti on June 19th, 2008 11:08 am Quote

I didnt play NCAA last year went with APF then played the hell out of Madden (online), I downloaded the demo this morning before work, and I have to say I am truly impress everything felt so fluid, from passing, routes that were ran, getting in the open field off of a slip screen for 51 yards felt great, then celebrating with the mascot was awsome. The pace of the game was perfect, i saw about 5 different tackle animations which looked pretty good, and then saw some tackles from last year. The only thing that was lacking for me was the atmosphere and replays, and that when te’s went in motion looked kind of weird other then that, I think EA has taken a huge step foward cant wait for NCAA and Madden

  49. Zane on June 19th, 2008 11:08 am Quote

And THANK GOD you can throw a deep ball this year (a pass with a little loft to it)

  50. Josh on June 19th, 2008 11:08 am Quote

After playing the demo for about 30 minutes this morning before I left for work I have a few initial impressions. 1st let me say that I love the gameplay. I don’t know what difficulty level it was set to be it seemed to be well balanced. The speed of the game is improved which was one of the biggest problems I had with 08. Everyone was complaining about a lack of the pass rush this year but I didn’t notice that at all. As Pasta mentioned in his initial impressions there are a lot of small improvements that only can be noticed when playing. Example: When a player runs out of bounds, instead of watching the player walk through players on the sideline like they don’t even exsist, the camera quickly switches back to the field of play. That’s probably EA’s way to combat their nonexsitent interactive sidelines. That being said the players on the sidelines look a lot more realistic (however there are no coaches which kinda sucks). The one negative that stood out is that the game is still sorely lacking in presentation. Overall I was impressed & it’s a definate improvement over last year.

  51. armando 1 on June 19th, 2008 11:11 am Quote

crimson vooodooo the game is actually slower then what uve probably seen in the videos, in earlier builds. scores are going to come out surprisingly realistic i just finished a game as osu and it was 21-7 i know its only 2 min quarters but if u add on a couple minutes the scores will still not come out to ur ridiculous assumptions of 76-62.

  52. Julio on June 19th, 2008 11:11 am Quote

wow you all are making me so anxious. I got up at eight to download on ps3 but I have to wait until six LOL and have been on here all day reading LOL

  53. Josh on June 19th, 2008 11:16 am Quote

Oh and one other thing, it’s kind of sucks that they don’t have progressive lighting & shadowing to go along with the lighting improvements. This is the only aspect that took a step backwards. Progressive lighting really gives you the feeling that you’re playing in a live breathing enviornment. Not nitpicking but that really stood out in the demo because it’s set for 6:00pm & I loved how in last years game it would gradually turn into a nightime game. FYI EA, once a feature like this is in the game, YOU CAN NOT TAKE IT OUT THE FOLLOWING YEAR!

I love the new running and how you can go from one move to another without having to wait for that move to finish. I also like how it seems like they go for the ball more(WR’S) . The deep bombs are nice looking and very accurate(maybe to accurate at times). I like the new tackles they added to the game to . So to sum it up NCAA is now a must buy for me and I can tell its going to be a great game.

About the LB at FB thing, Curtis Terry (Actually #99 for Ohio State but #55 in the game) will be one of their fullbacks. Brandon Saine will play some of the position as a ponyback and Brandon Smith will play fullback too. Just for anyone who wants to know…

  64. calexs on June 19th, 2008 12:40 pm Quote

I played the Demo earlier today prior to work. It has potential. I liked the passing. Its a little easy to pass but i’ll chalk that up to the varsity level. The passing is more natural and you feel like you can make tighter throws this year. I did see a pass rush. The computer sacked me a couple times. The pass rush is good enough not to be a really big issue. I like the animations for the most part. The only animation that I saw that was a little funny was the one where the player is just flattened to the ground very quickly. It looks a little quirky, other than that animations were nice. I think with a bump to all-american and some minor slider adjustments we might have a pretty good game. I need more time with the game to verify my early impressions. I also noticed the spped rating change this year. A receiver caught the ball in front of me and I could not catch him. LSU had no one in the secondary that could match his speed. This can be good and bad. It makes the game more wide open and increases the big plays but it places even more emphasis on the speed rating which was already to big of a factor. Despite this. I think most of us will be satisfied with the game. Phew i’m done.

I played 3 quarters on my lunch break before having to go back to work. I really like it a lot. I noticed some new things.

Slide protection and smart routes are great to have.

While playing as LSU, I really liked how when I showed the play art while the crowd was going wild, a few of the receivers had a ? over their head, instead of the passing icon (a,b,x,y,lb). This is a great addition to homefield advantage, as you don’t know the icons before the snap.

When a timeout is called you can now coach specifics, ball protect for example, instead of just LB’s, DL or secondary.
