Full game of NFL Head Coach 09

June 21, 2008 by pastapadre

NFL Head Coach 09 was a difficult game to jump into at a community event. The almost overwhelming number of options and the overall depth of the title was too much to experience in that short period of time and in that environment. My personal feeling was I would probably be SuperSimming most of the games but really get into the offseason and draft process. What’s great about Head Coach is there are several different ways you can play it. Whether it be in that manner or delegating to others in the organization and just managing the games if you wanted to, you can dictate the experience you want to have.

One thing that didn’t get shown out of the event was the process of actually coaching a game and seeing how it all comes together. Head Coach 09 designer Donny Moore has posted a video (broken into four parts) of a full game. You can watch the Patriots vs Dolphins from start to finish by continuing on and be sure to leave your thoughts in the comments.

The game looks good although I wish they would’ve used more of a tv style & sideline camera angle during gameplay. If you’re willing to put the time into this game then it looks like it could be a rewarding experience. The only problem is that most people will be so much into Madden that they won’t find time to put into this game. This is a game that you really have to invest time in to get the full experience of it. With Madden 09, NBA Live 09, 2K9, NHL 09, Tiger Woods 09, & others all dropping around the same time of year, I don’t know if HeadCoach will get the time of day. That said I will be picking up the Collectors Edition this year.

I luved playing coach mode on Tecmo Super Bowl for the NES. I would spend my summers completing 30 season where every game I’d simply call 1 of 8 plays then watch the CPU play it out. It kept me on the edge of my seat, very exciting. I’ve never, ever, enjoyed playing against the A.I. in any sports game. When you play the game long enough, it always becomes too easy to abuse the limited A.I. which makes it not challenging at all and not the least bit rewarding. You as the player have to peel back a bit and not call certain money plays that you know will work in order to have a competitive experience vs. the A.I.

I’ve never given NFL Head Coach the time of day since all my gaming is done over Xbox Live. I’ve always liked the idea of this game and sounds like it is the game for me. However, like someone said before, It is hard to hold me interest when there are so many games coming out like NHL 2k9. Great games to play online. So I doubt I’ll ever play this game at all.

i read a post by Phil Frazier this week that said in Madden 2010 franchise mode would get a much needed facelift…and to help with this they brought over one of the developers from this year’s NFL Head Coach game…so in layman’s terms…i have to believe that franchise mode in Madden 2010 will have most everything in head coach that would translate to the franchise game mode…unfortunately that means we have to wait another year…

OMG. This game is a disgrace. I Feel like Im listening to a Madden game. I hope this game burns in flames.

Looks cool but I can’t see myself playing this with Madden 09 looking so good.

  19. Josh on June 21st, 2008 8:47 pm Quote

Well at least you can create plays & import them to Madden so even if you don’t spend time playing it at least you can use it for that.

I’m praying to God that they have audio sliders.
The coach yelling all the time is really annoying.
You give up a 3 yard play and he’s like “ARE YOU F*CKING SERIOUS??!!?!”

UH YEAH I CAN TELL YOU NEVER PLAYED FOOTBALL THATS WHAT COACHES DO IS YELL FOR THE SMALLEST MISTAKES. BUT THIS LOOKS REAL COOL DISAPPOINTED THEY DIDN’T UPDATE IT LIKE MADDEN 09 BUT ITS GONNA HAVE ME WASTING A FEW HUNDRED HOURS OF MY LIFE GONNA BRING THE 49ERS BACK TO THE PROMISELAND.

  22. twsn88 on June 24th, 2008 9:40 am Quote

  23. twsn88 on June 24th, 2008 9:47 am Quote

and i I bet the uniforms are delightfully not changed at all. being that this game looks entirely different from madden 09… RENTAL!!!

  24. twsn88 on June 24th, 2008 10:00 am Quote

and it looks exactly like madden 08 only with a few zoom ins and minor glitches yay?…………. i mean i need to be convinced on what would be the seller for me of this game?

  25. Jamz on July 2nd, 2008 4:01 pm Quote

The artificial intelligences still need to improve it seems as if there were no improvements in this area. The QB will throw into double coverage instead of hitting the open receiver. The RB’s still don’t juke when the opportunity is there just a few quick assessments on the game from my view.

  26. J-MAN on July 2nd, 2008 4:40 pm Quote

I think this game looks really cool and gives you the other dimensions of football life and also its pretty cool they come out with another football game besides Madden…… don’t get me wrong i love madden but nfl head coach 09 looks really hott!!!!!

  27. fkr on July 5th, 2008 3:59 pm Quote

i am sure better QB’s than beck do not through into double coverage. this is strictly a management game if your players are inexperienced then they make bone-head moves. did you see beck play last year. man do i miss marino. i always play franchise mode and it is nice to see another go at head coach. i wasted pointless hours on the last version. the only thing i am worried about is will the ai make other teams that give you a true difficulty after say 5 years or will the human team dominate. i have had perfect seasons in madden franchise with out playing a game.

This game is gonna be awesome like someone said this game may be collecting dust be cause other amazing sports games coming out. The only thing I wish they put in was after game speech’s, like if you lose you can totally go gruden on your team and knock down stuff in the locker room in anger or take it nicely and try to say motivating stuff

Because they didn’t update the roster yet this was just an early preview

This game was such a cumbersome dog the first year it came out that I’m going to have to be seriously impressed before I take a chance and plunk down money to buy it out of the box again.

At least get me off to a good start by telling me I wont’ have to play for hours before ever getting to sim a game on it this time around…

  31. sean on July 17th, 2008 6:25 pm Quote

du they actually run the screen the right way now or does the quarterback still sit back in the pocket and gets sacked everytime

when does head coach o9 come out for pc? can two people build seperate teams and play each other on line? it looks very promising and very detailed oriented. i have been waiting for this to come out for a while. i hope you have fixed the training bug with the kicker/punter. also the one where you can only only certain teams through several seasons. i hope for the best.
