FNR4 Patch Problems

Last week the first patch and downloadable content for Fight Night Round 4 made its way out on the 360 and was expected out today for the PS3. However issues have arisen with it on the 360 and Sony has rejected the update in certification.

Reports quickly started coming in that the 360 update was causing numerous oddities including button configurations being defaulted in online matches and fighters not in the game showing up in the fighter select screen. Ironically the patch that is supposed to add the optional button punching config is not arriving until September yet somehow it has made its presence known here. All the problems are seemingly random and isolated to online play and a workaround has been suggested by EA for those online matches where button punching is forced on.

If you want to be absolutely sure you don’t encounter this issue in online, back out to the Main Menu after each online fight and then re-enter the game mode. If you do happen to enter a fight with buttons, you can pause the game, go into the settings -> controller configuration menu and then back out which will cause a desync with both fighters not receiving a win or a loss on their record. The desync should only occur if the bug appears.

The patch has been delayed on the PS3 and will be combined with the previously announced September update that will add in the button punching option. The fix for the 360 may arrive prior to the second patch but that is uncertain at this time.

It has been a rough launch for FNR4. The controversy with removing the option of button punching dominated discussion around the game, fatigue and balance issues online, disappointing sales, and now a faulty patch has resulted in lots of frustration for consumers.

in my opinion if you can create a patch for configuration back to Fright Night round 3 the game would have much better rating.

I have to admit that I was a die hard button fan. I got the game as a late fathers day gift played it for about two days, hated it and didn't touch it again till about 2 weeks ago. I gave the TPC another shot and I have to admit that I was wrong about the game sucking because of lack of buttons. Once you get the hang of the TPC this is almost a flawless game period. You can really see the developers vision using the TPC and I still want to give it a go when the buttons come out but I'm 90% sure I'll stay with the TPC.
As far as releasing the game before its perfect I don't really agree with that. It sucks that the legacy mode freezes up just when your fighters starting to get good and I haven't been online with it yet until I absolutely master my TPC so I haven't encountered online issues but I'd rather be able to play the game now, and hopefully the patches and updates can fix these issues at a later time.
EA if you really want to show that your sorry for the patch causing more issues then reward us with some more boxers Holyfield, Mayweather, Oscar, etc and tons of new gear for our patience and understanding.
  • Splash Screen Freeze
The patch was also supposed to fix the issue of sharing too many playlists from your computer, but, it is still broken. The game would freeze at the splash screen if you had too many playlists. Mine still freezes after the patch. I hope EA fixes this soon.

The game is the best boxing game yet, but it cant escape the EA marketing teams (or whoever makes decisions) ability to consistantly fuck things up with gimmicks and indecision, even when it comes to good games.

Why are people trashing Fight Night? The truth is that the only reason UFC sold more copies is because it came out 1st. It's the same reason for 360 sales vs PS3. If Fight Night came out 1st UFC would be scrambling for customers. Fight Night's timing is the culprit not the gameplay which is excellent. It's not about which is better it's about which came out 1st. and to criticize the constant updates after release is nit picking. When you buy a computer how many updates do you receive on the life on your computer? There will always be flaws as the few game testers can not truly simulate the millions of customers after release.

fas carl Mr. keeping it real
  • Review Sidewinders comment, thats dead on why FN4 failed in sales.
  • FNR4 actually got a fair amount of good reviews and I thought it was pretty good myself (although I never bought it after renting it).

These issues don't help, but I think the poor sales are just another sign of how boxing is dead...especially since the game came out right after the game from the sport that's killing it.
  • Totally with you on this one.
  • Lush Rimbough
How is anything that pulls in millions of dollars with no major cable tv promotion a year dead?
  • It's dead as in there's no saving it. It's not as big as it was just 15 years ago and I don't see how it's going to stop declining with the new generation of fans being in love with the UFC.
  • I agree that boxing is no where near as popular as it was 10-15 years ago. However, with the inclusion of classic fighters, the game does appeal to those who remember Ali, Tyson, Foreman and others in their prime.

FN4 is outstanding. The reason is that it feels as if you have to box. You can't just get in the ring and try to whale on the opponent without fear of running out of gas OR getting countered.

The best part is when you are in a good flow and you land a one-punch knockdown. Again, just another game that people prefer to rip.

I do agree that the sales may be down due to the increased popularity of UFC. I think this game would have fared better with a March release since NCAA and Madden are right around the corner...
  • This is why companies need to "finish" the game before its released instead of finishing thier product via patch. VERY stupid in my opinion.

    Earlier post by Mo Diddley:

Since everybody hates Fight Night and Madden and NBA Live and UFC and 2K and everything else including their own reflection in the mirror. What exactly do y'all like? It is so easy to complain but hard to give credit huh? To be honest out of all the sports games that were released the only games that sucked IMO are both basketball titles. Fight Night, Madden, UFC, NHL, are all good games and MLB the Show is the best out of all of them.

Does anybody remember boxing on the Atari system? Back then that was considered a good game yet these young uns today wanna complain about a game being boring. You have more people complaining about what sweatband a player wears instead of what routes they actually run lol. So the developers have to devote more BS time to accommodate authentic gear instead of towards gameplay. I bet none of y'all spend that much time critiquing what you wear compared to what a video game player wears lol.

So the moral of my rant is that if these games are so bad don't buy them instead go play the "REAL" sport at the park or at school. Can I get a "you got a point there Mo Diddley"?

Mo Diddley the tell it like it is-er!

Good point Mo Diddley. I have to give you props on that comment.

fas carl the giver of props when it's justified!

My main deterrent for the game was the lack of face button. I don't mind developers wanting players to play one way or the other. But at least provide us the option that we had since the first game.

The face button issue hurt their sales alot.

What do they mean, fighters not in the game showing up on the select screen? Which boxers have shown up? Is it because they are supposed to be in a later update but slipped through?

    Karma EA, Karma.
  • Rip
Pasta, stop referring to FNR4 as having disappointing sales when your argument in that article was flawed, if not farcical.
  • Josh
Pasta off topic but when you post your Madden vids can you please play a game with the zoom camera? I want to see how it looks. It would be much appreciated.
  • James
Honestly, what did they expect when they decided to remove button punching? That's like Madden removing analog player movement and sticking it soley to the Dpad.
  • Josh
I can understand these type of issues on a game like Madden that is released every year but EA had 4 years to work on FN4! This is unexceptable! These issues should've been addressed way before the game launched. I've lost all faith in EA as a company a long time ago. I love FN4 but only because I'm a diehard boxing fan.
  • EAShit
JUST RELEASE THE BUTTON CONFIGS YOU FUCKTARDS!
  • fg21
I still can't believe that "disappointing sales" is still being used as an argument on this website. The article about sales that you wrote compared a week of Fight Night sales to an entire month of UFC sales and called it disappointing. This is completely ridiculous and anyone who has played this game knows that it is better than it is being portrayed on this website. 50 online fights in and I have yet to see any of the online issues that are being pointed out here.
  • bxgfn
I bet they're saying, "man, lets do just enough improvements on the game to wet our audience's appetite.........sit back and let our marketing team do the rest until release.........and if they say there's a problem after release, we'll get up and try fix it for them"

  • pat
You're right dude. Everybody just seems to want to hate online. Just don't buy it. That's my opinion too.
  • TreyIM2
U speak the truth, Mo. I LOVE FN4. MUCH better than FN3, imo. Fighting through legacy mode is exciting to me because sometimes, no matter how good u think u are, POW, u've been floored by one good punch, out of nowhere. That's whussup. I love what EA has done with the game.

As for the UFC comparisons, eh. I really dug the demo but UFC is much more of a barbaric sport than boxing ever was. I can't get into watching the sport because of that fact so I didn't buy the game. Still play the demo, time to time, though.
  • I agree 100%. Gamers these days don't appreciate what is out there. I remember the Atari days and only wished for titles that had real uniforms, players / athletes, stadiums, etc. The problem is gamers of today are spoiled.

No one stops to look at exactly what they have. The other day I played NCAA 10 and pulled up a replay. I zoomed and checked every little item down to the grass. I thought to myself if games looked this sweet when I was a kid I would have never left the house.

No game will ever be perfect, which is subjective any way....
  • Mo.. you've gone from annoying me a few days back... to being my hero. FANTASTIC post. None of the games coming out now are "bad". All these kids need is a little perspective.

    Kudos, Mo. Continue to "Tell-It-Like-It-Is".
  • NELL86
Yea madden suck till this year on the next gen nhl fifa and fight night been good i feel this is the best fightnight to come out so people is silly with the hate in terms of basketball games hopefully they will make a comeback this year and mlb the show set the benchmark for sports games
  • heisman988
you got a point there Mo Diddley.....LMAO but you are right though.....maybe not abouth the BB titles but I take it you just dong like it....
  • Chrisjames313
Wow pitiful fnr4 btw 1ST!! Lol
  • This is a prime example of a bad nextgen game where the mindset is to wow us with visuals. What a complete joke and a knock on EA's reputation once again. Next time less advertising and more emphasis on making sure the game is right before release.
  • Raj
Aside from the visuals, I was not impressed with this game. I played it for about a week...got boring. I was hoping that it would draw me back in but a few weeks went by and I never had the inclination to play it again. It went right back to GS and I somehow got $39 in trade for it, which seems like a record for a GS trade-in. I usually expect to get $20-$30 for trade-ins from them. Glad that I won't have to deal with this patch BS.
