Many considered Titanic‘s record of $1.835 billion made worldwide to be unbreakable. Today Avatar surpassed that amount and did so in less than six weeks of release to become the highest grossing film of all time. It will soon cruise past $2 billion and there are no indications it will be dropping off any time soon.

Domestically Avatar still trails Titanic by $46 million which sets it up to break that record of $600 million by the end of next weekend. It will likely even see a slight boost after it gets a nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards next week and will continue pulling in impressive numbers through March. If it ends up winning the Oscar that will strengthen its run even more.

It has been a fascinating story to follow with the early hype, the pre-release backlash, the big opening weekend, the incredible word of mouth, the low drop-offs from week to week, and the record breaking takes overseas. Eerie how close it paralleled Titanic in almost every regard.
