With 2017 coming to a close it’s time to look back on the developments that have taken place and acknowledge the various efforts in sports gaming. The next category in the annual Community Awards is open for voting. You can check out the winners from previous years here.

Best Gameplay and Best Career/Story Mode can already be voted on! Categories still to come include Sports Game of the Year, Best New or Non-Yearly Sports Game, Best Mobile Game, Best Racing Game, Best Online Play, Best Presentation, Best Post-Release Support, Best New Feature, and Best Team-Building Mode. All winners will be announced in early January.

The best traditional franchise modes at one time were found in EA Sports football games, with NCAA Football and Madden NFL having taken the first four awards handed out in the category. More recently however it’s been all about NBA 2K which this year looks to go for a fourth straight win with its pairing of the highly-customizable MyLeague and the now story-based MyGM. Challenging this year are FIFA 18 which introduced interactive transfer negotiations and NHL 18 which added league expansion abilities.

2K wrecked MyGM this year buy inserting that stupid story mode and fake draft class into the first year. Beyond that it’s still it’s great old self, but they should have included a feature to disable the story. MyLeague is close to this, but then you lose the ability to earn badges and whatnot, which is part of the MyGM appeal to me in years past.

FIFA gets my vote because they seem to add an additional layer onto Manager Mode every year. Nothing drastic, but slow and steady improvement.

I thought the shear atupidity of MyGM was entertaining, but MyLeague not having proper player development does suck.

What killed “MyGM” for me was the fact that none of your decisions had any impact in the outcome of the story.

I would of had a lot more fun if “Punch Andrew Sanderson in the face” was an option.

MLB the show 18, is hands down the best sports game. You have to manage, not only the majors, but also the minor league as well. The player animations are awesome, etc.
