Madden Mock draft picks 27-32

April 22, 2008 by pastapadre

These final five picks concludes the Madden Mock Draft with only a recap of the entire mock still to come. With the exception of the 49ers all of these teams will go into the game next year as powerhouses. Despite that they can still capitalize on their picks and improve their status in Madden through them.

#27 San Diego Chargers - Kenny Phillips - S - Miami

The Chargers are a team that is stacked with talent at most positions and may be the most popular team to use for someone looking to win a big game. But there are a couple areas that could be upgraded such as at safety which is why Kenny Phillips fits here. He will be the top rated rookie at the position likely with an 82 if last year is any indication of what to expect. Three safeties were taken in the lower half of round one and all were rated an 82. Other positions that could be looked at here are running back to replace the loss of Michael Turner and a top tier offensive tackle. The RB could be grabbed in later rounds especially considering they still have Darren Sproles and all the impact OTs have been taken by this point. Phillips ends up being a great value at this pick.

#28 Dallas Cowboys - Chris Johnson - RB - East Carolina

With the Cowboys addressing their need at corner with their earlier pick now they look for a backup running back to replace Julius Jones. The consideration basically comes down to Felix Jones vs Chris Johnson. There were a couple points earlier in the draft where Johnson almost pulled an upset. He gets the nod over Jones here due to his blazing speed. He’ll be the fastest rookie out of the draft and will have a 97 or 98 speed rating. Combined with the power running style of Marion Barber that would make for a terrific Madden backfield combo.

#29 San Francisco 49ers - Dennis Dixon - QB - Oregon

Of course this won’t be the direction the actual 49ers go but you can’t get much worse than what they have at QB for Madden. Dennis Dixon would come in and provide the team with the opportunity to make some big plays whether they be through the air or with his legs. This choice likely represents the biggest surprise in the Madden Mock Draft. However given the propensity for mobile QBs to have success in the game he would be a good addition and would be able to outplay his initial overall rating.

#30 Green Bay Packers - Antoine Cason - CB - Arizona

The Packers have little depth behind Charles Woodson and Al Harris so a corner to play in the nickel or dime would be a big benefit. Choosing between Antoine Cason and Tracy Porter was difficult. Porter is faster but Cason should have a better overall rating. For what they would offer immediately Cason had the edge, if they needed a starter than Porter may have been the better choice. Other positions that could’ve been taken were at tight end and safety.

#31 New England Patriots - Robert Elswit - Cinematographer

In lieu of their forfeited pick the Patriots look elsewhere and will surely not pass on the man who won for Best Cinematography at the Academy Awards. Not only did he win for There Will Be Blood but another one of his movies, Michael Clayton, was nominated for Best Picture. Clearly he is a natural fit.

#32 New York Giants - Erin Henderson - LB - Maryland

The Giants could use help at safety and linebacker. The best choice here is to go with Erin Henderson who had big production in college and was rated in the 90s in NCAA Football over Cliff Avril who was only rated in the low 80s. Henderson would plug one of the holes left by departing players this off-season.

Dixon might be good for the 49ers………except they took Michael Robinson (in the same mold) a few years back who now plays HB for them when Gore gets hurt (not if, but when he gets hurt)

we now know that the Miami Dolphins signed with Jake Long today but who will be the second pick?

Idk why Cason has dropped this far. Clearly he’s the best DB in the draft. He’s the Thorpe Award winner, started all 4 years & never missed a snap, returned 2 punts & 2 int’s for TD’s this past season, was 1st team AA, ran a 4.4 at the combine, shuts down half the field, finished 2nd in tackles at Arizona this past season, and plays the run way above average.

People think that someone from East West South North Nowhere State Junior College for the Deaf & Blind that runs a 4.2 at the combine makes the an elite corner.

#27 - Agree - The Madden Chargers don’t have many needs, but they could use some safety help as they have little depth after losing Marlon McCree via free agency. Phillips is the one.

#28 - Agree - A RB they do need, however, I thought Felix Jones, RB, Arkansas, a product of Jerry Jones’ alma mater, would be the pick.

#29 - Disagree - I just don’t see Dixon getting more than a 77 or 78 rating even though he will probably have a good SPD rating. This year’s Madden needed a speedy QB. ‘09, from what I gather, a speedy QB need will be lessened somewhat by offensive line shift and better pocket protection in the game. I think the o-line, with its’ losess of OT Kwame Harris, OG Larry Allen, and OG Justin Smiley would be bolstered by a Jeff Otah, OT, Pitt, or Sam Baker, OT, USC, with both getting a 77 or 78. But I do see your point of the Alex Smith year.

#30 - Agree. I just had a different CB, Brandon Flowers, VA Tech.

    #31 - What you said!

#32 - Agree. I just had a different LB, Dan Conner, Penn State. And Conner hails from Linebacker U.

GOOD MADDEN MOCK DRAFT, PASTA!!!!!!!!!ENJOYED IT!!!!!!!!!!!

First of All,Chris johnson,Dennis dixon,Antoine Cason,And Erin Hendersen Are not going in the first round. The cowboys take Quentin Groves because If he doesn’t help at outside linbacker,he will help as a pass rusher.
Chargers take brandon Flowers because of the loss of Drayton Florence and could really help as a slot corner.
The 49ers take Gosder Cherilus because Alex Smith or Shaun Hill-who ever take under center-needs that protection that the 49ers have been lacking.
I just can’t see the packers taking Antoine Cason Because I believe he is a second round pick.I see the packers taking a tightend because of the release of bubba Franks And donald Lee can’t do it all by himself.Look for them getting John Carlson because Carlson is a complete Tightend and Green Bay can scare Defences With the two tight end set.
Finally the New York Giants take Dan Conner Because Dan can complement Antonio Pierce and they can scare QB’s with that 3-4 defence.

LMAO at pats pick I freaking love it Pasta!!!!!

Just curious, Pasta. If Madden is supposed to be a “simulation” game… why would a team’s real needs and “Madden” needs be different? Is this to cater more to the cheeseball play that’s prevailent online (hence, picking a running QB for the ‘Niners)?

  12. duckfan on April 22nd, 2008 5:49 pm Quote

i dont think dixon is going pro… hes gonna play baseball from what ive heard

Oh… as I said earlier… I enjoyed this feature if only because I have never heard of any of these guys and now will have an inkling of an idea when the draft roles around this weekend.

    Thanks!

When Gore gets hurt? I don’t think Gore has missed more than 1 game since he was drafted, and also M Robinson is used more in special teams and short yardage situations, thats’s why we signed DeShaun Foster to compliment Gore, now with the pick, Dennis Dixon I can’t agree with, Alex Smith has decent speed already so there is no need there, Groves would make more sense Manny Lawson and Q Groves would be a force rushing QB’s from the outside

LOL Pasta @ Dixon to the 49ers… that would be sweet but hell no. They need a WR or Offensive Linemen or Defesive Linemen… I would see Dixon going in to 2nd to the 49ers (still think he is a 5th or 6th rounder). I would like to see them grab Mario Manningham or James Hardy but DIXON???? LOL

    I thought they played a 4-3 defence

I have the Chargers taking Jonathan Stewart the big Running Back to replace Micheal Turner, the Cowboys take Limas Sweed from Texas the 49ers take Dan Conner the Middle Linebacker to team him with Patrick Willis, Packers get Mike jenkins to be their nickel back and PATS forfeit so the Giants take Kenny Phillips the safety from (THE U)!!

  19. josh on April 23rd, 2008 3:56 pm Quote

For some reason everybody assumes that Chargers are going Safety, but we re signed Clinton Hart to a multi year deal and Weddle is gonna be our other safety. It would be nice to go halfback this draft though, because now that we saw LT is vulnerable to injuries just as everybody else, we need a decent backup halfback.
