99 rated players in Madden 08

Madden 08 screen Browns

ESPN the Magazine has revealed all of the players in Madden 08 that have a 99 overall rating.

Peyton Manning (QB Colts), Champ Bailey (CB Broncos), Walter Jones (OT Seahawks), LaDainian Tomlinson (RB Chargers), Steve Smith (WR Panthers), Brian Urlacher (LB Bears), Steve Hutchinson (OG Vikings), Ed Reed (S Ravens), Troy Polamalu (S Steelers)

The only player in that group that stands out as questionable is probably Polamalu. He certainly was the one name I didn’t expect to see in that list and someone like Adrian Wilson might be more deserving at safety. The only position not represented with a 99 (outside of specialty positions) is the defensive line. Julius Peppers or Jason Taylor would’ve made sense but must’ve just missed the cut, as well as DTs such as Marcus Stroud, Jamal Williams and Kevin Williams.

And really…shouldn’t Tom Brady be a 99 also?

Yea, I definitely don’t agree with Polamalu. Peppers and Brady need to be on the list.

Nice to Walt on the list…

I’d like to see the 99 rating be handed out to an exclusive number of players, say five. Then the 99 wont be thrown around as much.

    1. Peyton Manning
    2. LaDanian Tomlinson
    3. Tom Brady
    4. Champ Bailey
    5. Brian Urlacher

Steven Jackson a 99? Sorry not yet, maybe ever.

Why isn’t Antonio Gates rated 99? There isn’t a better TE better than him in the league ATM.

Yeah I thought about Gates also. IMO there should be a 99 rated player in every position (including kickers and punters) and the players should be judged relatively in their specific positions.

Adrian Wilson? Adrian wilson over Polamalu? Obviously, someone isn’t to keen on the League. If you want to believe Polamalu doesn’t deserve the 99 rating, fine. However, to say Adrian Wilson is more deserving is just plain stupid.

I don’t think Wilson nor Polamalu deserves a 99. However its kinda the east coast bias because Wilson is an extraordinary player. He just doesnt get the same national recognition cause hes on the Cardinals.

Being a Steeler fan, I am a big Troy Polamalu fan. However, I don’t think he should be rated 99 and I don’t think Adrian Wilson should be either, but Adrian Wilson is severly underrated. What’s worse is that the Cardinals don’t even promote him at all, either. I’ve been starting to collect jerseys of players I like and I’ll be damned if I can’t find an Adrian Wilson jersey nowadays. I see a bunc of Edge and Leinhart jersey’s, but hardly and Adrian Wilson ones if any.

If anyone thinks Adrian Wilson is not deserving of a 99 rating, they are sadly mistaken. That guy is one of the hardest hitting “PLAYERS” in the NFL. You ask some of the guys around the league, and they’ll tell you that without skipping a beat. He’s a smart player, fast and aggresive with intent on doing damage every play.I’m not saying Troy is not a good player, but he should’ve been given a 94-97 rating. If Adrian played on another team, especially on the east coast,he would get greater respect among football fans, period. Where’s Dwight Freeney??? You cant mention any defensive end to me unless DF in 1st out of your mouth. That guy should be a 99 !!!!

Freeney didn’t really have a great year. Even at his best he is weak against the run, so theres no way he should be an overall 99.

Marcus Stroud played 11 games last year.It wouldn’t have made sense to give him a 99 in this years Madden.Jamal & Kevin Williams? Blah!Their numbers weren’t better than Freeney’s last year either.Ahh,Peppers.I would agree with you on peppers but I can’t.Peppers is surrounded by talent on the D-Line.So is J.Taylor for that matter. With both those guys,it’s pick your poison for any team playin’em.Freeney is a different case.Teams doubled & tripled him last year yet he still got Williams’ like numbers.Nope,Freeney is my 99 DE.But lets see if EA updates the roosters and give those other linemen a 99 later this season.

Raiders did you reall say that Taylor is surrounded by good players? He is that D, without him they would be almost dead last in the leauge, he opens it up for everybody else not the other way around. Its hard to campare Freeny to the Williams. DF is a pash rusher off the edge and Jamal and Kevin are space eaters that take pressure off the LB. You can’t look at numbers to campair a DT and DE. You have to look at the D as a whole, I don’t know about 99 but they should be up there for sure.

Throwback, you’ve gotta be kidding! J Taylor IS the “D”? Go back and check the stats of Miami’s D again. Then come back here and tell me honestly that Taylor didnt have a substantial amount of more help than Freeney on the line.As far as the Williams’ are concerned, the point was, they shouldn’t be mentioned before Freeney, period.Personally,I dont think any DT deserved a 99 in 08.

hey WTF are you talking about, DF Best DE, just see Terrel Suggs of baltimore ravens an later talk all of you shit, so adrian wilson and urlacher over Ray Lewis is just a shame, so i’m forgetting something or wasn baltimore defense, comanded by RL52 who was ranked No. 1 over the league and who held payton manning and co to just 5 field goals in the playoffs, so no to talk of trevor pryce, the only linemen who blocked a field goal last year, and finished with 13.5 sacks, if there must be a whole defense with a 99 overall and the best at their position must be baltimore defense. Payton is not as good as brady, sure he is brilliant, but not as brady, sure Jason Taylor is the best DE, but i preffer Jeavon Kearse, and Peppers

ok probably the reason that polamalu got a 99 is because hes one of the most intense ATHLETES that the nfl has seen…hes incredibly fast and quick and very strong for his size…if all of his ratings are high his overall is going up, also hes a ball hawk and a natuaral playmaker…hes obvioulsy not worth a 99 in reality yet because hes still very young but the fact of the matter is that hes incredibly gifted.
on to taylor…jason taylor is also very good, the reason he doesnt have a 99 rating (even tho its probably still a high 90) is because he isnt that strong of a lineman, mind you hes still stronger then half the players i the league but when his strength is at a low 80 is takes a toll on his overall. if any DE would be a 99 or eventually a 99 it would be peppers, hes an intense combo of size strenth speed and agility…also i think champ bailey should have gotten defensive [player of the year…he control his half of the feild not to mention 10 ints and 80+ tackles, and being one of the few CBs in the league able to stop the run as well as a top flight LB
and to any doubters of urlacher being 99, i admit back in the day he was more reputation than action, but over the past 2-3 seasons he has been an animal…and those of u saying ray lewis is better…you are idiots, lewis has been on a downward spiral for the last 2 seasons and urlacher is way beyong him now. mind you he still is one of if not the best LB in the afc and probably #2 in the league but urlacher is just that good now…just watch urlacher on a screen play and you will see his intelligence and speed

also steve smith is not a 99…but he is around 97-98 with chad johnson n marvin harrison…i dont think any wideout deserves to be 99 except harrison that year he caught 147 passes…thats just rediculous
as for freeney, who ever doubts him having a good year last year is retarded…but hes still no 99 maybe 97ish
whoever said kevin williams 99…NO…he is not better than stroud or henderson or jamal williams who are all 95ish players…no DT will be 99 except MAYBE tommie harris in the future…hes a great combo of strength and speed…maybe if he puts on 20 more lbs
adrian wilson 99? again no, mid to high 90s yes
hutchinson 99? heeellll no…not after lastyears season, id throw him at low to mid 90s …99 when he was with the hawks yes but not after last season
ppl throw around these 99 ratings like no tomorrow… the only ppl really truly worth a 99 are manning brady tomlinson(only bcuz of last years season) bailey and urlacher …but even the ppl at madden throw 99s around too much

OK. Carlos, how could you even say that Peyton Manning is not as brilliant as Tom Brady? Manning basically calls his (not Dungys) plays in about 10 seconds before the snap with audibles. Tom does only what hes asked. He throws the ball better but in terms of brilliance, Manning is the smartest QB the NFL has ever seen. PS, I personally dont mind about the ratings except that Jason taylor, League MVP, didnt make 99.

I agree that the 99 gets thrown about too much. Chad Johnson should be rated 98 hes the best receiver in the league at the moment. Steve Smith and Harrison are the next two best receivers and should be 97-96. Hutchinson should never be a 99 after last year either and i’m still not convinced on the urlacher 99. If you use the arguement that no wide receiver can be 99 because of Harrison’s 147 season then surely you can’t give Urlacher a 99 because of Ray Lewis’s Past seasons. The argument that every position should have a 99 is stupid, some players are simply not deserving of a 99 when compared to players in past seasons. The 99 players should be
    -Champ Bailey
    -Peyton Manning
    -Walter Jones
    -LaDainian Tomlinson
    -Jason Taylor
