The first indication that the Saw franchise is vulnerable has arrived. The previous sequels all opened with 30-34 million however after Friday’s take Saw VI looks to finish up the weekend with about 18 million. The relatively low budget makes this still a very profitable venture but a disappointment because the majority of the money the picture will make will come in the first eight days.

Not only did Saw VI drop significantly, for the first time it won’t be #1 at the box office. Paranormal Activity kept up its remarkable run and will come out of the weekend with another 20 million. The movie was made for just $11,000 and will have totaled 60 million to date.

The big question is whether Saw is losing steam or if it was just an anomaly due to Paranormal Activity stealing away the crowd. In all likelihood it’s a combination of both. For those tired of Saw there are no indications the franchise will stop anytime soon. The sixth and seventh installments are already being worked on for release over the next two Octobers and will have a new pull that could boost the series right back up. They will be in 3D.

Other openers have Astro Boy headed for 7 million, Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant on the way to 7 million, and Amelia looking to finish with about 4 million.
