The first threat to Avatar’s reign at the top of the box office arrives this weekend with The Book of Eli. Also new for the weekend is the Jackie Chan comedy The Spy Next Door while The Lovely Bones expands wide after showing in very limited release for the last month.

The last few years have changed the perception of January as being a dumping ground for studios. The Book of Eli looks to take advantage of an opening by providing the star-power of Denzel Washington and a story that will appeal to an action audience that hasn’t been catered to since Avatar released and may be looking for something new. Last year a relatively comparable film in Taken came out to $24 million. While The Book of Eli looks like a long shot to topple Avatar it still appears to be headed for a very solid weekend. Reviews have been mixed but audience anticipation has been built up well. The NFL Playoffs could cut into its potential considering it will appeal most to the male demographic. The Book of Eli could draw about $28 million which would actually make it one of the best openings of Denzel’s career.

After a month in limited release the Peter Jackson directed The Lovely Bones arrives nationwide. Being adapted from the best selling novel means there is a built-in fan base already that should support it. While the movie has gotten decent reviews it hasn’t been the overwhelming response or gotten the awards nominations that seemed likely a while back. The Lovely Bones could make $12 million this weekend to add to the 500K made from three theaters in limited release.

Hoping to appeal as a family friendly option is The Spy Next Door. Having Jackie Chan star doesn’t mean all that much these days at the box office and the idea of someone unfit having to take care of children is completely unoriginal. Still it could end up being more interesting an option for parents than taking the kids to Alvin and the Chipmunks. Promotion has been light and reviews have been absolutely horrid. The Spy Next Door could see a weekend of about $8 million.

Opening Predictions
The Book of Eli: $28 million
The Lovely Bones: $12 million
The Spy Next Door: $8 million
