Twilight: Eclipse has captured the record for a Wednesday opening having collected $68.5 million. $30 million of that came from midnight showings representing yet another record. Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen had previously held the Wednesday record with its $62 million opening last year.

Eclipse did not, however, break the record for largest single day gross. That title will remain with the last film in the Twilight franchise as New Moon opened on a Friday to $72 million on the way to a $142 million weekend. The opening day represented over half of its full weekend take.

This time around Eclipse has better reviews (though that is unlikely to cushion its fall) and a long holiday weekend ahead. It has the potential to make over $150 million through Sunday.
