Dreamworks has announced that a sequel to the hit animated film How to Train Your Dragon is in the works and will be releasing sometime in 2013. The original voice cast such as Jay Baruchel, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse will all be back.

How to Train Your Dragon made $217 million domestically and is just under $500 million in worldwide total. It is one of the best reviewed films of the year and a lock for a Best Animated Feature nomination at the Academy Awards. The studio even plans to push it for a Best Picture nomination. It releases on Blu-ray and DVD on Friday.

Also there is news that the movie will be turned into a TV show which is something that Dreamworks has a history of doing with their animated franchises. More specifically they look to take popular characters from them such as “The Penguins of Madagascar” on Nickelodeon. It is unknown what the focus of the series could be, but given that the voice talent from the films likely would not follow it would make sense if the story centers on a secondary or new character in the same world.
