Though it wasn’t a blockbuster opening the R-rated comedy No Strings Attached was able to come out on top of the box office for the weekend. Headlined by Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher the film grossed $20.3 million on the highest per screen average. The number comes in line with expectations and when put up against a relatively light budget of $25 million it becomes an undeniable success. Reviews, as typical for comedies that push boundaries, were mixed but the marketing was strong enough especially with Portman riding a wave of success lately.

The Green Hornet fell a respectable 46% in its second weekend to finish in second place with $18.1 million. It has now totaled $63 million in 10 days and is rolling out in more foreign markets where it has so far pulled in an additional $15 million. The Dilemma fell just about the same percentage wise bringing in $9.7 million for a $33.3 million total.

The King’s Speech made nearly identical to its take last weekend with $9.2 million, and True Grit rounded out the top five with another $8 million. Those two are really doing well taking advantage of the awards season buzz. Black Swan, The Fighter, Little Fockers, Yogi Bear, and Tron: Legacy completed the top 10.
