The decision by Paramount to push Shutter Island back from October 2009 was met with some criticism at the time but has paid off big for the studio. Shutter opened to a massive $40.2 million and dominated the weekend box office. This represented the largest opening weekend gross in the career of both director Martin Scorsese (The Departed $26.9 million) and star Leonardo DiCaprio (Catch Me if You Can $30.1 million). There has been a lot of talk leading up to release how Valentine's Day was able to keep its budget under $50 million despite having a star-studded ensemble cast. The studio was so confident in it becoming a hit that even a sequel is already in the works. The formula has certainly paid off already as Valentine's Day made $52.4 million over the weekend which included three others making over $20 million. As anticipated the terrible reviews for Valentine's Day did nothing to damage its potenti...

Years from now it may become a trivia question. What movie ended Avatar's reign at the top of the box office after winning seven straight weekends? The answer is the Nicholas Sparks novel adaptation Dear John which soared past all industry expectations to make over $32 million. The military angle may have been what was most underestimated as the film was targeted not just to the younger female demo but also heavily marketed in military areas. Avatar still only dropped 24% to $23.6 million taki...

Avatar won its seventh straight weekend easily while the two new entries performed right on with the predictions. Avatar now owns the record for highest weekend gross for every weekend except its first. It will pass Titanic for the all time domestic record this coming week and cruise past $2 billion worldwide. In second place it was the Mel Gibson revenge pic Edge of Darkness. Despite not having starred in a movie since 2002 it drew a solid $17.1 million which was a reasonable result for a ...

Many considered Titanic's record of $1.835 billion made worldwide to be unbreakable. Today Avatar surpassed that amount and did so in less than six weeks of release to become the highest grossing film of all time. It will soon cruise past $2 billion and there are no indications it will be dropping off any time soon. Domestically Avatar still trails Titanic by $46 million which sets it up to break that record of $600 million by the end of next weekend. It will likely even see a slight boost ...

As expected Avatar easily cruised to its six straight weekend win but one of the new movies beat expectations and performed very well. Last week that was The Book of Eli and this week it was Legion. The two other new entries this weekend had disappointing starts. Avatar was able to make another $36 million which pushed it past The Dark Knight for the second highest grossing movie domestically ever trailing only Titanic. It has now totaled over $550 million. Worldwide though Avatar is expect...

It was the fifth straight weekend at the top of the box office for Avatar but The Book of Eli and The Lovely Bones performed well and slightly above expectations. Avatar is quickly approaching the record held by Titanic of the highest grossing movie of all time. It is already over $1.6 billion worldwide and at this pace could surpass Titanic in the next couple weeks. No one seriously contemplated this happening before Avatar came out and anyone would've been laughed at suggesting it could a...

Continuing its extraordinary run Avatar pulled in another $48.5 million this weekend nearly tripling the amount made by any other movie. What is even more remarkable about that amount is that it represents a drop of just 29%. That would be an amazingly small drop following any weekend let alone a holiday weekend. Many had wondered how Avatar would hold up once everyone went back to school and work and the results are showing that the movie is here to stay. There is no doubt now it will chal...
