The Disney animated film Tangled opened above expectations however it still wasn't enough to stop Harry Potter. The second weekend of Deathly Hallows: Part 1 came in #1 at the box office for both the three day weekend and five day holiday run. Tangled was able to draw $48.6 million for the three days and totaled $68.5 million from its Wednesday opening. Certainly having the power of Disney behind it helped as did a large opening of 3D screens thanks to Harry Potter bowing out of releasing i...

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 opened to $125 million for the weekend making it easily the biggest start for any film in the franchise to date. It made nearly half of that total on Friday (which included the midnight shows) though and that evidences just how front-loaded it was and that may be a sign it won't go on to be the highest grossing total when all is said and done. The other new opener was The Next Three Days which finished flat in fifth place. Despite it being one of...

While it didn't turn out to be record breaking as some were anticipating, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 turned in the highest gross for the series from the opening midnight showings. The movie made $24 million which places it third highest in history behind just Twilight: Eclipse and Twilight: New Moon. The projection for the full weekend is now around $135 million. That would make Deathly Hallows: Part 1 by far the biggest in the Harry Potter franchise to date. Goblet of Fir...

The animated film Megamind held off challengers, in particular a solid opening from Unstoppable, in order to win its second straight weekend at the box office. Other new openers had decent but unspectacular starts to their runs. Megamind came in second on Friday but surged with strong Saturday and Sunday numbers which is typical for family-oriented films. It made $30 million and now has totaled nearly $90 million in just 10 days. Strong results from 3D screens have helped boost its take and...

Megamind, Due Date, and For Colored Girls all performed well helping to combine for a record breaking total to the holiday season kick-off weekend. The three totaled over $100 million and contributed to the top 10 which finished with $142 million. The animated film Megamind, which released with the most 3D screens of any film to date, won the weekend with $47.6 million. That puts it in similar territory to How to Train Your Dragon, which went on to gross over $200 million domestically. Mega...

As expected horror films topped the charts for Halloween weekend as Saw 3D opened #1 and Paranormal Activity 2 posted a solid take coming off its #1 opening last weekend. Saw 3D made $22.5 million which is up $8 million over what Saw VI took in last year. $9 million on Friday was followed by heavy drop-offs on Saturday and Sunday which is typical of a not just a horror movie but even more so a sequel. The movie will have no legs at all but considering the $20 million budget it is already pr...

Paranormal Activity 2 scared up $41.5 million for the weekend and in the process broke the record for a horror film in October. It also becomes the highest grossing opening weekend for supernatural-themed horror ever. The total includes $6.3 million that came from midnight showings on Thursday night which again was another record as the most for an R rated film. Grosses did fall on Saturday by 35% and then another 36% on Sunday. There is no doubt it won't have strong legs but after such a b...

Soaring past all expectations Jackass 3D turned in the biggest opening weekend for a September or October release in history with $50 million. Industry expectations had pegged the film to make just over $30 million for the weekend but it crushed on Friday alone with $22 million. Jackass 3D certainly benefited by the higher ticket prices that come with 3D but it was more about the extra appeal it provided. The movie was sold on the 3D premise and that it would enhance the experience. It was ...
