Word of mouth for The Social Network has helped it hang on to the top spot at the box office besting three new releases. The movie fell just 30% to $15.5 million and has now collected $46 million. Life as We Know It, Secretariat, and My Soul To Take all produced mediocre results. In second place it was the Life as We Know It which pulled in $14.6 million. The romantic comedy starring Josh Duhamel and Katherine Heigl had a strong marketing push but got poor reviews. However audiences seem to...

Two horror films hurt each other's potential while a likely awards season contender sailed to first place at the box office this weekend. The Social Network came out on top, while Case 39 and Let Me In finished in 7th and 8th place respectively. Riding high on great buzz and terrific reviews David Fincher's The Social Network pulled in $23 million and in doing so more than doubled any other film for the weekend. Marketing had been heavy for the film but its premise and some misconceptions (...

Two new releases had solid, though maybe not spectacular openings at the box office. The sequel to the 1987 film Wall Street came out the winner, while the animated adaptation of the Guardians of Ga'Hoole novels followed in second place. With $19 million Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps came in right about at industry expectations. It was never pegged to be a huge hit, though it still carried some nostalgia factor and intrigue considering the timely nature with the economy of today. The film...

After a few weeks with slumping returns the box office heated up with the opening of four films that all saw their own level of success. Easy A was expected to win the weekend and it still did really well but The Town came out on top, while Devil and Alpha and Omega turned in good results considering they cost little to make. With The Town director Ben Affleck not only has a critical winner with the potential for awards consideration on his hands but also a box office hit. The movie made $2...

The only wide opener in theaters this weekend was the fourth entry in the Resident Evil series and it turned in the best opening for the franchise yet. Resident Evil: Afterlife pulled in $27.7 million and was buoyed by higher priced 3D showings and IMAX screens. The previous high mark was from the last one, Extinction, which made $23.7 million its opening weekend. Talk has already begun on a fifth RE film given the continued success of the series. Resident Evil seems to have a built in base...

Labor Day weekend has accounted for the worst total box office performance of the year as The American takes the top spot with Machete coming in third and Going the Distance tanking in fifth. George Clooney gets his first solo #1 opener with the assassin themed The American. Pulling in $13 million for the weekend it has now totaled $16.1 million since opening on Wednesday. The movie had decent reviews and just moderate interest but that was enough along with having Clooney headline to prope...

It may traditionally be one of the slowest times of the year at movie theaters but this weekend saw two new films become instant successes. The Last Exorcism, a horror movie made for a paltry $1.8 million, edged out the ensemble heist movie Takers for the top spot at the box office. The Last Exorcism received generally positive reviews and had a unique marketing which included a Chatroulette campaign that saw the video of reactions go viral that helped to really increase awareness. In secon...

It was a relatively weak run at the box office where last week's #1 film, The Expendables, dropped 53% to $16.5 million but remained in the top spot despite the opening of five new films. All of the new openers had decent openings considering their budgets but none broke out to be hits. Coming in second was Vampires Suck, which sits amongst the worst reviewed movies of all-time but still made $12.2 million and now sits at $18.5 million since coming out on Wednesday. The parody movie which f...
