Tomorrow a free-to-play version of Pro Evolution Soccer 2016 will go out on PS4 and PS3. It's a unique strategy, built upon offering a few features but with a focus on providing the complete myClub experience, that looks to be another step towards a future where sports games are delivered in a different manner than the traditional yearly packaged product. Things have been trending towards free-to-play emerging on consoles, and sports games that are struggling in the marketplace have the m...

The big sports gaming news this month has related to the official announcement of the sequel to 2014's EA Sports UFC. That game was a disappointment but some reason for hope came about through developer EA Canada's extensive post-release support that improved the game immensely. While the popularity of the sport has waned in recent years, there's still reason to think UFC could be a successful bi-yearly franchise, and EA is hoping a digital revenue generator, in the form of Ultimate Team, wi...

With all the sports games out for the year attention turns towards actually playing them instead of just following news and developments in anticipation of them. Pro Evolution Soccer 2016 has emerged from the group as the highest rated sports game since 2013, while FIFA 16 and NBA 2K16 are dominating in terms of worldwide sales. Of course there's also Madden NFL 16 which has a strong hold on many, some may be settling in with NHL 16, revisiting MLB 15: The Show due to postseason interest,...
  • Which Pro-Am from the upcoming NBA games is the most intriguing?

NBA 2K16 and NBA Live 16 don't share a lot in common in terms of the modes they'll be offering up, but they do have one that is not just similar in nature but share the same name: Pro-Am. The 2K Pro-Am takes the place of last year's Jordan Rec Center, and continues with 5-on-5 (every player can be controlled by a different user or some spots taken by CPU) and NBA rules. Leaderboards and matchmaking have been added - no more time wasted waiting in "Got Next" spots! However the biggest new...
  • Your thoughts on the short-term draft modes coming to EA Sports games

With the success of the Ultimate Team model in EA Sports games, the company is faced with not just how to evolve and keep that mode fresh, but the challenge of developing new modes that capitalize further on what they've learned from it. The first attempt at such a mode is being introduced this year in Madden NFL 16 and FIFA 16. Draft Champions was announced at E3 while FUT Draft just premiered at Gamescom. Though they borrow conceptually from Ultimate Team they've eliminated the long-ter...
  • Does having few licensed courses and golfers affect your McIlroy purchase decision?

    Posted June 29th, 2015 at 5:00 pm 15 Comments »
Just two weeks now - and well under that for those with EA Access, and Rory McIlroy PGA Tour will be in the hands of consumers. EA Sports has made a concerted effort to appeal to a more casual crowd with the game, offering up multiple play "styles", fantasy courses, and a mode called the Night Club Challenge. What they haven't done is tout their lineup of licensed courses and golfers and for good reason. There are only 12 real golfers on the roster and only 8 courses included on disc (plu...
