It's no secret that sports video games have struggled to gain any traction in esports. Competing against and being compared to the real world sports they attempt to simulate, and video game tactics taking precedence over real strategy and coaching decisions, have resulted in general apathy and broadcasts with low viewership numbers. Millions of dollars are being poured into esports initiatives for games like Madden which draw only a few thousand viewers while games like Fortnite have organic...
  • Finally some movement on Kessler vs NCAA, which is the case to watch if college video games are to return

There hasn't been much movement over the last six months towards the potential for a return of college video games. For that to happen a new system will have to be put into place that allows collegiate athletes to be paid for their likenesses while retaining eligibility. The Supreme Court's decision on O'Bannon vs NCAA kept things in limbo, leaving the action brought by attorney Jeffrey Kessler as the next best hope for change. That case had a major development today as Judge Claudia Wilk...

Recent sales that have taken the price of NBA Live 18 down to $7.50 and even as low now as $4.50 made it obvious that an addition to the EA Access Vault on Xbox One would be happening sooner rather than later. Live 19 is now the second EA Sports game from 2017 to have reached the Vault joining Madden NFL 18 as being available in full to all subscribers. EA Access is currently exclusive to Xbox One with Sony declining to offer the service on PS4 despite its remarkable value. EA executives ...

Take Two today revealed financial details from Q3 2018 and that included record numbers for NBA 2K18. The company saw growth in both total net revenue and digitally-delivered net revenue over the same quarter in the previous fiscal year. NBA 2K18 was a big driver in both areas (digital up 30%) along with the Grand Theft Auto titles. Last year for NBA 2K17 it was a figure of 8.5 million touted by Take Two for that release quarter which turned out to be a "shipped" number instead of a "sol...

It took over a week following the finalization of the rosters for this year's All-Star Game for the update to be made in NBA 2K18 but that has now been completed. Those rosters, along with the official 2018 ASG court and jerseys, can currently be found in 2K18. This year there's no East vs West but rather teams drafted from the pool of All-Stars by the top vote-getters in Stephen Curry and LeBron James. The jerseys are also unique prominently featuring the respective team logos of each pl...
  • NBA Live 18 gets its deep discount now for PlayStation 4

Earlier in January a deal on NBA Live 18 brought the game down to its lowest price point ever of just $7.49 but only on Xbox One. That same deal has now reached the PS4 and will be available for the next week to PSPlus subscribers. Given the turbulence of the series over the last decade there was never a chance that NBA Live 18 would sell many copies no matter how good the game would turn out to be. Skepticism from consumers was more than justified and its competitor too popular and well ...

Given the turbulence of the series over the last decade there was never a chance that NBA Live 18 would sell many copies no matter how good the game would turn out to be. Skepticism from consumers was more than justified and its competitor too popular and well established. Instead the goal for EA Sports was always to regain some credibility and slowly bring more people on board through word-of-mouth and by playing with the price. A pre-order discount making the game $40 was the first stra...
